Guest guest
hi sarah, My son also is 4 and has bm accidents as well. He's ben potty trained since september. I'm sorry this is gross but are his bm's a little on the loose side? I notice that my son has more accidents when they are loose. I also feel he holds it to the last possible second to go. I think with this combo its hard for him not to have accidents. am I wrong to think this? I feel like when he gets a little older it will get better or maybe more fiber? I hope I helped some but had questions too chris MOMFULLX@... wrote: My son 4 1/2 years old who has verbal apraxia, dyspraxia, hypotonis , and SDI. has been in the preschool program in our public school program since 4/2002 where he get speech 3x a week and OT once a week. He also has been in private speech therapy 1 hour a week since 5/2002 and OT one hour a week since 9/2002. He got the AAC device Chat PC 2 in 8/2003. He just began Therapeutic Riding this month. Now my question, Potty training. has been wearing underwear for the last seven months. Urination seam under control with me telling him to go to the potty every 3 hours or so. He still has accidents when get involved in something, and most of the time he realizes that he is wet and wants change. We do still have to moments that we find him soaked and he doesn't seam to mind. At preschool they say he goes on his own and has only had one or two accidents which were bowel movements. Bowel movements are our problem. He is not afraid to set on the toilet or to have a bowel movement there [the few time we have had success]. He doesn't not have a regular time that he has a movement. Sometime it is everyday then others it is every day or two. It can be afternoon of night. He does realize after the fact and now is trying to clean himself {so now I am having two messes to clean] which before having solid pants did not bother him at all. I was wondering how any of you handled potty training. I know that is very common for a child with both apraxia and DSI to be a challenge to potty train. Thanks for any advice you may have to offer. Guest guest
Not sure how this will help since your son doesn't seem to have a " regular " time he goes. With our son, he goes in the a.m. and again in the early evening - regular as clockwork, unless he's going through a constipation period. To get him regular, though, we would put him on the potty and just let him sit for a bit (gravity does wonders!) - read a book, play word games, etc. My husband had him sit and sing " Old Mc " - that " e-i-e-i-o " part, especially with the emphasis Josh would put on those sounds, sort of uses the same muscles need for the pressure to have a bowel movement. I know that sounds goofy but it works! Guest guest
Hi Sara, I know this topic comes many times. Potty training can be difficult for some of our kiddos. It sounds like your son is doing quite well so far. Bowel movement control tends to be more difficult for children that have sensory issues. I'm sorry I can not offer you any advice at this time. My 3.8yo son is still in diapers, and has not reached this stage of potty training yet. However, Chase just started this week taking his poopy diaper off and putting his bowel movement in the toilet and flushing it down. This has been messy at times, where I not only have to clean him, I have to clean the toilet, floor, counter...lets just say the whole bathroom. Although, this has been frustrating for me, I have not scolded Chase for doing this. I do not want to discourge him in any way from potty training. WELL atleast he's not taking off his diaper in the family room anymore ( not for several months now)! NOW that was a mess, requiring professional cleanings. Guest guest
The hypotonia could be causing his bowel control problem. Children with low tone, don't get the same sensation regarding having to go. He may not even realize he has to go, until he HAS, or until it's too late. Children with low tone tend to train LATER, not because of intelligence or unwillingness, but more because their little bodies aren't giving them the strength of signal that a child may learn to recognize at 2 or 3 years of age. A SUGGESTION would be to keep him in pull ups. Take him REGULARLY to the potty (i used to do it every hour), and make him understand that he should tell you if he feels like he has to go, in between. Sometimes it's just a matter of continuing to " catch " them at the right time, to get them to understand that sensation means " I gotta peeeeeeeeee, lol " ... After a few weeks of this, you may be able to gauge when it is that he DOES go.....is it every 2 to 3 hours, ??? does he have a bowel movement at any particular time of day? If so, possibly have him on or near the potty around that time. (that worked best for us.) It was a little restricting for a short time, but worked quickly so once he got the idea that " this is what it means, and this is what i do..... " , he was then able to tell me, and get him there in time. After just a few weeks, it was like a habit, and there were no further problems. Im guessing the hypotonia is what's causing your little guy this difficulty....he's surely not " late " considering this. Good luck.....let us know if we can help! ~K Re: [ ] Potty training Help needed Hi Sara, I know this topic comes many times. Potty training can be difficult for some of our kiddos.
