Ok I took a look at the chart that compares adrenal issues to just

plain hypothyroidism. I had about 75-80 percent adrenal issues and

about 25% just hypo issues so I am assuming thats enought to raise

question.Let me know if I am wrong in thinking this. I saw that

Isocort is recomended my concern is that it says youshould take 6

pills a day! Are the rest of you on this taking that much?? The

Cortef said it has a steriod in it and I am leary about that as I am

busting my butt to lose weight I dont need the added appetite, is

anyone on it and can tell me that its not as bad as say something

like prednisone? Also is anyone finding success with herbs or

something that I can get at a grocery store or walmart instead of

having to order this stuff online and waiting for it. I really

appreciate everything you guys do.

IsoCort contains 2.5 mg of cortisol per pill. Cortisol is a natural

hormone to the human body. Prednisone is a synthetic and therefore

it does not break down in the normal fashion in the body and the

patient can take much less because it lingers. The human adrenal

gland of a healthy person makes 35 to 40 mg of hydrocortisone per

day for a not strenuous day. Adrenal support typically consisits of

taking 10 to 20 mg of hydrocortisone in the form of cortef or

IsoCort or a glandular a day. This means that you need between 4 and

8 IsoCorts a day. This is 1/3 to 1/2 of total adrenal output. If

your adrenals are not making the amount needed, adrenal support

serves to make you feel better and to make you have healthy levels

of hormone. If cortisol drops too low, there are many damaging

effects that are just as serious as it going too high. Low cortisol

causes excess inflamation, impairs immune function, interferes with

the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, prevents the body from

adequately using thyroid, slows conversion of T4 to T3 and many

other things.

You cannot overdose or get any symptoms of overdose from any dose

that is lower than 35 to 40 mg. This is because whatever you take

below what the body needs, your own adrenals will drop their

production by whatever you take to keep levels below about 35 to 40.

It is the same for thyroid hormone. You don't get overdoses by

taking anything less than the thryoid makes, which is 4-1/2 to 5

grains. You can get symptoms of thyroid overdose if there is not

enough adrenal. This is because without adrenal thryoid builds up in

the blood and cannot get into tissues. You can still be hypo, but

have a lot in the blood affecting the heart and muscles.

People take adrenal support to help them utilize thyroid better. It

also helps to allow you to get your dose up to optimal sooner. It

cam make you stay much healthier and it can help the adrenals to

recover sooner by allowing them to build back up their stores of

hormones (they store about 3 weeks worth) and by taking some of the

demands off of them so they can recover. You can certainly go

without it, but you must be careful about stress and you must really

take care of yourself. Also, it can slow the rate at which you can

make thyroid raises.

I have not once gained any weight from using adrenal support in two

years of using it. I suppose if it made your thryoid treatment work

better, you might take up nutrients better and gain some weight. If

you are low on adrenal output and you just take what is needed to be

normal, it isn't possible that you could get any symptoms of

overdose. The major cause of weight gain in thyroid treatment is a

thryoid dose that is too low causing a metabolic rate that is too

low. Adrenal can actually help thryoid work better and keep

temperature and metabolic rate higher.

just to comment on this weight thing. Although I only gained about 10 lbs

with hypo...and lost about 1/2 of that with Armour...it wasn't until I was

taking the Delta prednisolone that I lost the last 5 lbs. I have no explanation

for this other than perhaps my body was utilizing the armour better with the

adrenal support. Also, I have had no increase in appetite. But i may be an

exception.
