& Renal Tubular Acidosis

Hi Evveryone!

I know it's been a long time. Things are slowing down here, so

I'm finally up to writing you. I wanted to pass along some info to

you all. At the conference in July I had asked Dr H if she had come

across any other children with RTA and she told me that some had come

to her with the diagnosis and on Bicitra ( the medication that

corrects the imbalance) and that she didn't feel at all that that was

a true diagnosis and after looking at the lab data she often took

thmem off the bicitra. She also encouraged me to come see her. Now

I know I'm walking on thin ice with some of you so far, but bear with

me. I was very upset when I came home in fact I've had this info for

2 months but wasn't sure how to present it without hurting anyone's

feelings or coming across badly. Josh does in fact have RTA. My

nephrologist who is board certified in this area spoke with me at

great length. In fact josh has a kidney stone as a result of it. We

have had several renal ultrasounds & it has shown up on this last

one. I now know if Josh has any unexplained abdominal or back pain

it could very well be a stone passing and I now know to look for it.

The good news is that seems to be growing out of it. When he had his

last surgery he had a reaction to the anesthia and was vomiting & on

IV fluids for 48 hrs. He had been without his bicitra for that long

and his CO2 (carbon dioxide) levels were normal. Even with being

dehydrated and having episodes of vomiting. He will however stay on

the bicarb for awhile to help prevent any further stone formation.

So if your child has had a past Dx of RTA it wouldn't hurt to keep in

touch with your renal doc. The bicitra can not be overdosed in

people with kidney function, what the body doesn't need gets

excreted. SO while there may be some RSS children who don't have RTA

some very well might.
