Pro side of ABI

Hi ,Yes I have a regrowth or piece of acousitc neuroma they thought they had removed but didnt get all of it and its right behind the ABI that did not work for me when it was implanted in 1996.Im sure Im not the only one who will get a regrowth behind an ABi since in NF2 regrowths of acoustic neuromas seem to occur .Besides that Have a great trip down in Oz! Tev

, I had first AN out in 75; two years lady had a huge regrowth, out

again; that was about 80; I have a " regrowth " that is about 1.5 cm, but has

stayed at that size for about 15 years; as a matter of fact, when I first

started with HEI, Brackman wanted to take out that 1.5 tumor in the deaf ear

and do an ABI while I was still hearing; my Pgh. doctor faxed him, and

convinced him it had not changed in 15 years and to just leave it alone. So

let's just hope they are

going to sleep! And sorry guys, but if I had an AN regrowth, I would have

fractionated radiosurgery. marie

I definitely want to hear both the pro and con side of the ABI from the recipients' point of view. When the time comes (and it will) I will hear from the doctors -- but I don't believe the doctors will be able to tell me about the experience from the other end of the surgery - pro or con.

I'm a little late on posting on this subject but I'll add my input since I have an ABI.

I think Carla was right on the money with an earlier post. I dont think anyone should go get their head cracked open unless their hell-bent on having one. Otherwise, I think the time for consideration is mainly when having an AN taken out. At the beginning I wanted nothing to do with the ABI, but figured since their gonna be drilling in my head, why not?

I get a very good response with the ABI also and even have used it on the phone to make calls. The conversations arent long and detailed but short and to the point ones work and normally can understand it all if there isnt subject jumping.

Would I get it again....yea, I would. Even though I get a lot from it, I rarely use it. I'm comfortable with my deafness but its nice to have the option at times to use it. Its all a personal preference if you wish to have one or not.

I think really the main point brought up that people seemed to perceive as ANTI ABI was the complications that can go with surgery. What was being spelt out to you all was a word of caution. You can come out a lot worse off or even die.

The JOHN HOLE experience should never be forgotten.
