Guest guest
Well I'm interested in any new ideas about how to wear it: Marie Re: Pro side of ABI >I'm sorry for all you've gone (are going) through, . I certainly get more than beeps and >trombone blasts (except for when the DTV chanel landed on a 9 Inch Nails >concert.) None of you can outweigh the benefit (decide to get one or not bc >you don't want just " beeps " you want more..) unless you know what it's like >having one. Many of yall will run out and pay big bucks for a tactile device >or anything else that'll make you " hear " again or communicate easier, the ABI >is many steps above that (tactile) and even better than the " hearing " I had >with my hearing aid. But if you start throwing in the bit about " I'm well >adjusted " it sounds like you are passing on the ABI for that reason, or bc >beeps aren't good enough. >, when do you go back? I'm no pro with mine but I love it. I hear >EVERYTHING, some clear, *many* not clear. Guest guest
, exactly why did they remove the first ABI from your brainstem? Is that necessary in order to install the second one? marie Re: Pro side of ABI >Carla, > >I think you missed my clarification message. I'm not anti-ABI. Guest guest
, I had first AN out in 75; two years lady had a huge regrowth, out again; that was about 80; I have a " regrowth " that is about 1.5 cm, but has stayed at that size for about 15 years; as a matter of fact, when I first started with HEI, Brackman wanted to take out that 1.5 tumor in the deaf ear and do an ABI while I was still hearing; my Pgh. doctor faxed him, and convinced him it had not changed in 15 years and to just leave it alone. So let's just hope they are going to sleep! And sorry guys, but if I had an AN regrowth, I would have fractionated radiosurgery. marie Re: Re: Pro side of ABI >pray for no regrowths carla. Guest guest
I definitely want to hear both the pro and con side of the ABI from the recipients' point of view. When the time comes (and it will) I will hear from the doctors -- but I don't believe the doctors will be able to tell me about the experience from the other end of the surgery - pro or con. Guest guest
I'm a little late on posting on this subject but I'll add my input since I have an ABI. I think Carla was right on the money with an earlier post. I dont think anyone should go get their head cracked open unless their hell-bent on having one. Otherwise, I think the time for consideration is mainly when having an AN taken out. At the beginning I wanted nothing to do with the ABI, but figured since their gonna be drilling in my head, why not? I get a very good response with the ABI also and even have used it on the phone to make calls. The conversations arent long and detailed but short and to the point ones work and normally can understand it all if there isnt subject jumping. Would I get it again....yea, I would. Even though I get a lot from it, I rarely use it. I'm comfortable with my deafness but its nice to have the option at times to use it. Its all a personal preference if you wish to have one or not. Its a no brainer that HEI is gonna praise the ABI miracle cuz that is their business. My decision wasnt based on a profound statement from HEI, it was based on others who had already received one. I dont think others should judge anyone who has received an ABI and say that they just 'want to feel normal and hear again' cuz thats not the case. Not 100% and anyone who has an ABI is gonna recommend if all goes well with thiers and its not shoving it down your throat. ~Earl <~~~ gonna start strangling people with his ABI cord

Guest guest
I think really the main point brought up that people seemed to perceive as ANTI ABI was the complications that can go with surgery. What was being spelt out to you all was a word of caution. You can come out a lot worse off or even die. The JOHN HOLE experience should never be forgotten. Marcus not wanting to strangle anyone .
