Guest guest Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Today was my last day for chemo Barb!!!!!!! I am so happy for you Barb and will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers! I got my last taxol / herceptin today and the nurses did this little celebration routine that they do- they blow bubbles and dance around ya and they have this stuffed monkey that sings a song! So fun! We even took all the nurses a cake. My 13 y o thinks she is a Deen and she is always baking the best cakes and pies- we have taken the nurses some pretty often since we have been there every Friday all summer long. Well they put in an order for a caramel one, and Jenna made a turtle cake - that made the celebration complete! I will have to keep going every three weeks for the next year though- for herceptin only. (it is not considered chemo though.) I will only be there an hour and a half or so each appt. That is better than 4 to 5 hrs weekly ! They said we will celebrate again when the herceptin is over too! I think they just love to party! They are the best! I am sooooo thrilled my chemo is all over! I have tolerated it well and have been very blessed overall. The steroids have been the worse part about it for me, as many of you have experienced. I do not go back to any drs till Sept 12- that must be some kind of a record for me since all this started! Woo hoo! Feels good! Then I have a myriad of appts from the 12th thru the 29th and my surgery is on the 29th. Can't wait for that actually! Love, Quote

Guest guest Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Hi Barb: You wrote: <<I went through Love's book last night to get an idea of what to look for. DH thought that a bad idea but personally, diagnosed Stage IIIc, I thought it a good idea to know what might happen instead of suspecting every little ache and pain.>> I think it is good to educate yourself all that you can. If you all have not read the new issue of CURE- it is a survivor's issue and I read it cover to cover today at my appt. You all MUST read this issue. If you want the link on how to get a free subscription I know that we have posted it here and I will look for it and post it again. It is so good! it has Lance Armstrong on the cover and it is just full of helpful info throughout - really positive , encouraging, and informative. I got mine in the mail the other day and just took it to my appt but the waiting room at my oncs was full of them so you can look for a copy at your drs office too. I can't say enough about it , dh and I were discussing things that we read in it all day. In fact, one of the points that was made was exactly what you said Barb, knowledge is power. I told my hubby that I don't want to be a hypocondriac, nor live in fear but nor do I want to be informed and oblivious, or be in denial and ignore things. I want to go forward and live my life and pray that God will lead my steps and help me to learn all I can and also that He will give me wisdom to know when to get something checked out , etc. Now I see the radiology onc on Sept 15 and the onc in 3 months. Will seem funny not having to go to the Cancer Center every 3 weeks. I will be seeing the radiation dr 3 weeks after my surgery too- to start 6 wks of that. By my onc is starting me on the every -3-week herceptin on Sept 12. She is also starting me on the Tamoxifen prior to the surgery too. They are saying that this is preferable now, due to some studies that have been done. But with all the discussion about the side effects of the Tamoxifen (that was discussed in the current issue of CURE too! ) I am a little concerned about starting it prior to surgery! So I will discuss that with her Sept 12. I also read where they are looking at using a osteoporosis drug rather than the Tamoxifen, so that could be great news! Not approved yet and I can't even recall the name but I will email the article to the group when I find it! I am going to show this article to my oncologist and discuss all of it with her. I am sure she will have read about it and it could be that possibly some of us could try that! I just want y'all to know that I am so thankful for all of you and all that you share! I learn SOOO much from each of you and you just really bless me with the support and caring shown! Blessings, in GA - who is a happy, happy girl tonight because I am done with my chemo! Quote

Guest guest Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 Barb - Regarding Dr. Love's Breast Book - it became my bible. My surgeon lent me an office copy and I went right out and bought my own copy. If it weren't for this book, I would have been completely in the dark about the trams flap reconstructive procedure. There were diagrams and everything - no surprises. Everything else I read in there enhances what I get from my doctors and this group and gives me more of a feeling of control. Guest guest Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 , My dh and my onc thought maybe I was reading too much and on the internet too much searching out info about bc, but I disagree. Did it scare me?... yes, but not any more than the cancer itself.... did it give me hope?... yes, definitely and definitely this forum... and certainly helped me to understand what the surgeon and onc were talking about when they said things... I had already heard it here or read it somewhere. And now with treatment over and the concern about recurrence, I want to know what is abnormal. I don't think that is a bad thing. I don't want to get paranoid about it, just look at it as a way of not getting over wrought about every ache and pain. Barb R. Michigan Re: Graduation Day!!! me too!
