Guest guest
Antibiotics are necessary at times, but they do cause problems. Antibiotics kill off the beneficial bacteria along with the bad, so you'll have to boost your probiotics and possibly make adjustments to your food choices during the course of antibiotics and for a few weeks (or longer) afterwards. While taking the antibiotics make sure you eat yogurt or take an acidophilus supplement. You'll need to time things so you wait at least 2 hours after taking the Bactrim dose before having your probiotics (yogurt). You should also choose foods that are easy-to-digest for you, as your digestion won't be tolerating much. After the course of antibiotics are over, continue eating easy-to-digest foods for several weeks, and push the yogurt or acidophilus. If you feel yeast/candida is a concern, then also avoid or limit the " trigger " foods; in other words, watch the fruits and high-carb veggies. Expect that you will have to work hard for a while regaining lost ground. There is a list on one of the SCD websites that list the types of antibiotics and rank them according to the impact on our digestions. Can't find it at the moment, though. My doctors have never accepted any of my suggestions for which antibiotics to use, unless I have reacted allergically to one or more in the past (which I have), so I wouldn't count on your doctor giving you something other than Bactrim. It really depends on what type of infection you're dealing with. Kim M. SCD 5 years > > Hi Ladies, I'm going to be taking Bactrim for a urinary tract infection. I'm two months into the SCD and seeing progress (now taking half the Miralax dose I used to take). > Will antibiotics help or hurt my SCD progress. Should I eat more yogurt. Any advice would be helpful. > LIsa >

My mother had to take it due to MRSA septicemia, and it does some real damage. We had no choice in her situtation, but it certainly did her harm, not the least of which was total hearing loss. Just don't want anyone to go through what she did ! Sue R
