Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Cappie, This is very interesting!!! So now a ? Which do you think is better, the vinegar, chromium,or the cinnamon? Or would, you use all 3 together. I fill empty capsules ,with cinnamon,it's much cheaper,do you think I could do the same with the vinegar. I'm a little concerned as ,to if all this would interact with medications ,as I'm on lots of stuff, for different things. Thanks for sharing this info,it is appreciated. I'm always looking for ways to inprove the Blood Sugars & to lose weight as well. 55 /diagnosed 1979/type 2/insulin dependant/Humolog/NPH/Diamicron MR/Cinnamon capsules/present weight 253.4 Quote

I assume they are talking about the cider vinager you can get easily in the store? Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 They also mentioned pickles. Now, I used to eat a lot of pickles, but once I left the east coast found it very hard to find a decent pickle and other pickled products. I have a friend who drinks the pickle juice; perhaps her body was telling her something. I think I am going to add back some pickles, particularly at night. For me this will be the most palatable way of getting vinegar. Helen Quote
Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I find that pickle relish goes well with bland food, especially meat and veggies. Also you can use vinegar as the base of salad dressing. Evidently, you don't need much for the benefit. Charlie Re: Vinegar helps bg's They also mentioned pickles. Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I don't think the kind of vinegar matters. I love pickles & eat them whenever I want right out of the jar one after the other, Now I won't feel bad about it. My youngest grandaughter is the same way & once ate a whole jar of pickles while visiting over a weekend when she was only 6. I also love tangy food & often put vinegar on fish when cooking it & of course I marinate a lot of veggies overnight to serve as low cal/good for me munchies. I've always preferred tangy (but not sour or bitter) rather than sweet tastes. I even put vinegar on spaghetti squash when using it with sauce because it has too sweet a taste for me. cappie Greater Boston Area T-2 10/02 1/05 A1c: 5.4 = 115 mean glu 50-100 carb diet, walking, Metformin ALA/EPO, Coq10, B12, ALC, Vit C Cal/mag, low dose Biotin, full spectrum E, Chromium P, Policosanol, fish oil cap, fresh flax seed, multi vitamin, Lovastatin 20 mg, Enalapril 10 mg 1/05:145 lbs (highest weight 309), 5' tall /age 67, cappie@... I guess that things like sweet rice vinegar would also be out for the same reason. I tried some vinegar today and let me tell you, you just can't drink even a couple of tablespoons of it straight. eee-YUCK. I tried adding some water but it was still pretty awful. I wonder if lots of water and a little bit of splenda would work. I used to hear of something like that as a fake lemonade. I tried a dill pickle with lunch but I'm not at all sure it it has two Tsp. worth of vinegar in it. - sky - I base most of my fashion taste on what doesn't itch. http://www.skydancers.com http://www.skydor.com Quote

Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Jan, it is still possible to get barrel pickles in NY and NJ. In fact, if I am lucky my sister will arrange for a shipment today for my belated Christmas present. I also like the Batampte brand of pickles which I used to get at Whole Foods in Cupertino. But they don't have them any more. They also make a wonderful sauerkraut that does not taste like it has come out of a can. I guess you might say the cabbage is pickled rather than fermented. The pickles here, even the national brands, have too much dill for my taste and there is way too much salt. I like the Cascadian no salt pickles; however they are very expensive and hard to find. With the low carbs, low calories, and high crunch I find they are an ideal food for this diabetic. And now, having the benefits of vinegar brought to my attention again, they are more desirable. Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Hi y'all, Having made pickles on occasion (I have a great recipe for refrigerator pickles!), I know that brine is really SALTY. Vinegar may be great, but if you overdo the salt, you might risk raising your blood pressure and harming your kidneys. Moderation... Dori Quote
Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I am not too sure of the pickling process; however cucumbers are a very wet vegetable. If the salt brine draws out some of this liquid, it could be that the vinegar replaces it. Places I have used vinegar - soups, salads, stews, raw veggies dropped into leftover pickle juice. Then there is drinking it from the pickle jar. I am trying to use a green food which tastes like all the bad parts of spinach and other greens (I am not fond of greens and usually sneak them in), maybe I will try mixing it with some pickle juice and water. Two benefits with one swallow? Helen Quote

I was thinking more of the acidic content than anything else. I use balsamic vinegar, too, though my favorite dressing is extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice. Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Helen - I get the BaTempte Garlic Dills and also the Deli spears - fantastic - do you have Boar's Head cold cuts on the West Coast? They also have a fresh pickle that they have in jars at the deli counter. I can also get red cabbage and sauerkraut i n jars from Germany. I would suggest the internet to find some good stuff maybe from the midwest - Barb in NH Re: Vinegar helps bg's Jan, it is still possible to get barrel pickles in NY and NJ. Guest guest Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Sky: Minute Maid bottles a frozen fresh lemon juice -- comes in a tallish yellow plastic squeeze bottle in the frozen section of your grocery. It is NOT lemon juice for drinking. I keep it on hand all the time just for cooking & salad dressing. Well worth the hunt to find it. Yeah the acidic content is why I mix the red wine vinegar with the balsamic when using it for a dressing. When using it just for flavoring such as in a tomato sauce, I don't. cappie Greater Boston Area T-2 10/02 1/05 A1c: 5.4 = 115 mean glu 50-100 carb diet, walking, Metformin ALA/EPO, Coq10, B12, ALC, Vit C Cal/mag, low dose Biotin, full spectrum E, Chromium P, Policosanol, fish oil cap, fresh flax seed, multi vitamin, Lovastatin 20 mg, Enalapril 10 mg 1/05:145 lbs (highest weight 309), 5' tall /age 67, cappie@... Guest guest Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Thanks but I think I will leave the book writting to our esteemed Gretchen Becker who has said most of what I do in her book Tyoe 2: The First Year. As far as the weight goes, I am glad I have been able to take it off. Just like CJ, I didn't set out to do that, it just happened while getting my bg's under control (had to stop eating all those carby foods which I loved LOL). Then I discovered that the loss, contrary to what the so called " experts " said, didn't make one darn bit of difference to my diabetes or its control Still it is nice to be a fairly " normal " size now & be able to shop where I want & be able to feel more stylish again. I am physically more comfortable, my bp is normal & I don't need strong pain meds for my arthrits anymore. All in all, I consider it a good " swap " for the loss of those starches! cappie Greater Boston Area T-2 10/02 1/05 A1c: 5.4 = 115 mean glu 50-100 carb diet, walking, Metformin ALA/EPO, Coq10, B12, ALC, Vit C Cal/mag, low dose Biotin, full spectrum E, Chromium P, Policosanol, fish oil cap, fresh flax seed, multi vitamin, Lovastatin 20 mg, Enalapril 10 mg 1/05:145 lbs (highest weight 309), 5' tall /age 67, cappie@...
