Guest guest
Yes, it helps but doesn't cure....I would recommend it as I have been on it for over 3 years. St. Amand has a new book coming out on the use of Guai. It should be out by the end of this month. Guest guest
Guai doesn't work for pain, at least at first. You need to go to a physician who understands its use and you also have to insure that you are not taking any products containing salyciates. The Fibromyalgia Treatment Center will be selling Dr. St. Amand's bood on the use of gaui. The book should be out in the first week of November. If you are interested please drop me a note. It made me SO much more tired that I just couldn't take it, I have too many things I have to do to become nonfunctional and I walk such a fine line already. I heard later that you do get sicker on this before you get better (if you get better). Yes, I too have heard of groups that do really well on it though, just never knew any personally. Guest guest
It is supposed to help FMS by making sonovial fluid around joints more liquid - according to my RHEUM. It is also an expectorat breaking up congestion in lungs so that makes some sense. But if FM is neurological, I don't see what difference it would make! I do take it more for lungs, however. I have a combo guai/ephdra by script which is just robitussiin plus sudafed. Hope to hear from others! Christie > >Has anybody on this list tried quaifenesin therapy? Guest guest
Your Rheum is dead wrong... St Amand is the one who discovered Guai as a treatment protocol. In fact, we are currently raising funds to do a further double blind study. The cite for guai is http://www.sover.net/~devstar/phguai.htm. You may want to print out the materials and forward them to your physician. Best of luck. At 07:19 PM 10/23/99 -0400, you wrote: >From: " C.Tab. Guest guest
I am thinking of trying the Guaifenesin & Have been reading the info. I have a few questions about the products to avoid. Since I am already EI I do not use many products they recommend avoiding. But some things I am worried about not being able to use. I use almond & safflower oil in transdermal DHEA & progesterone. What oils can I use to substitute? I also only use olive oil & ghee in my diet. Can I continue to eat it in foods? I also can only use Jojoba oil for a sunscreen. There is nothing else that is safe for me. I also use almond oil on my skin. Any suggestions about what I can use?
Guest guest
Theresa--just to add to the last post on guaifenesin; you need a perscription from a doctor to get it in 600mg pure form. This is what you must get if you want to try this therapy. It exists in small amounts in over the counter products like robitusin or cough syrup but you would have to take huge amounts to get the required amount of guiafenesin. Guest guest
My CFIDS doc gave a prescription for this for some of my symptoms. In my case it didn't seem to help any (but we are all different), but it did really tear up my stomach. If you have any history of Ulcers, etc., be very careful with this one. As a matter of fact, the PDR has specific warnings about using this drug if there are stomach probelms such as ulcers. Guest guest
I have been having severe IBS & stomach pains, gas bloating cramping etc & even had projectile vomiting recently after drinking lots of strong antifungal tea. I also had vomiting after drinking a lot of black tea recommomended for migraines. So I am worried about the Guaifenesin if what you say is true. I do not know if I have ulcers, but I have a lot fo food allergies & hypersensitivties to everything. (Severe MCS) What kind of stomach problems & how quickly did it manifest? Guest guest
Hi, When I started taking this I found within just a couple of days that I was getting heartburn and reflux. It continued to get worst until the pain was pretty bad, and nothing I took seemed to help. I had, about 8 months prior, been diagnosed and treated for reflus and stomach irritation bordering on an ulder. The Guaifenesin brought all these symptoms back worse than ever. I talked to my doc, and he took me off it and prescribed Klonapin instead. I hope this info helps you. Guest guest
I'd like to ask something about guaifenesin that maybe you would know the answer to. I read about it on a Fibromyalgia site and gathered that the dosages used were higher than what you would get from the amount in cough syrup, so people were getting prescriptions for tablets. The other thing I noticed were the warnings that you would feel worse before you feel better. Well, when I take cough syrup with guai in it, non-alcoholic, no codeine or any other funny stuff in it, I get the strangest " drugged " feeling. My head feels funny, I can't think straight, and sometimes I feel overstimulated by it and can't sleep if I take it at night. This is just from a small amount of guaifenesin compared to what people take for FMS! What I am wondering is whether these are the kinds of reactions people get when the guai is working for them, or am I experiencing something different? I'm wondering whether I should try taking it if my response to it is indicating that I'm one of the people who it can help. I just don't know exactly what the " feeling worse " is supposed to feel like. I've been avoiding cough syrup ever since I realized it was the cause of these weird sensations. I also wonder, for the people that guaifenesin doesn't help, presumably they don't notice any effect for the better or worse? Or do they also " feel worse " when they take it, but just never start to feel better? Thank you for any help you can give me in understanding this. Guest guest
Hi Bob, Thanks for sharing your progress with Guaifenesin. I still have the article from the CFIDS Chronicle about it but haven't tried it because I thought that it was more for fibromyalgia. Do you have some fibro symptoms such as stiffness and trigger points? I don't, but I do have daily vascular headaches and muscle pain that seems to fit the low blood volume/virus & toxic overload idea. But I wonder if this would help me. Can they test in any way before starting the protocol or do you just have to plunge in and go through the misery. I don't know if I could stand getting any worse than I am without knowing whether it's working. I admire your leap of faith and endurance through the first month. I would appreciate knowing how long you have been ill. I think that I recall Dr. St. Amand saying in the article that it takes a month for every year of illness. That would be 12 months for me. I wonder if that means 12 mos. of misery before improvement? And you mentioned that you are working. I would be interested to know how many hours you are able to be productive and mentally or physically active compared to how you were, typically, over the past year on the Cheney (and others) plan. I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but it's always exciting to hear that someone is making good progress. Like you, I have lost weight and am getting worse except for small boosts as a result of hundreds of $$ of nutrients monthly. So, I would greatly appreciate whatever time you could give to my questions. Thanks, Bob, and congratulations. Sandy " Bob R.
