Guest guest Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 I had to ask back in December after I saw the Herceptin news on television. My path report had the information, but I didn't think to ask until this " New " breakthrough came out in October of 2005. Don't feel so bad. Best, (Her/neu2++) Quote

Did you just now get your path report or did they just now write it Or just not take note of the protein status when they reported back to you? Guest guest Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 Wow-you should be upset!! Does it change the method of treatment for you? I found out my stats after surgery and had an appt. with the onc. I was in the dark until the path report came back. The biopsy didn't tell me except I had bc. The surgeon just said he did two surgeries to make sure the margins were clean and the onc. gave me all the stats. Sharon C ruthiema36 wrote: Well, I am not a happy camper. In fact it should have been done on the biopsy last January. Soooooooo, where the hell would I be if I wasn't looking out for myself? TRUST NO ONE!!!!!! Guest guest Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 Hi Ruth, I'm sorry to hear it took you so long to get your diagnosis about your Her2 status. I know the tests can take a couple of months (they first test via something which is known to be not as reliable, but is cheaper, and then test via FSH which is more reliable but takes longer). I think it took over 2 months for my test to come back, and I got the results because I kept asking. We do have to be our own best advocates at times. Ruth, when do you see your oncologist? Will this change your decision about chemo? Maybe you can just take Herceptin without chemo beforehand. - Quote

Guest guest Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 I was diagnosed by biopsy in January. Stage 2 estrogen+, pogesterone-. At that point did not know about HER2. After my mastectomty, the end of March (node negative) I asked my surgeon about the HER2 status at my 3 week check up. He was going to look into it. Asked again at the next checkup a month later. He wrote the order to have it done. The hospital path dept did the test and claim they sent the results to the surgeon on May 23rd. When I heard nothing I called the surgeon's office and nothing had ever been sent. Got in touch with the hospital and they faxed the info to the surgeon's office. Called the surgeon's office and got the bad news. Called the oncologist and had my next appointment moved up to July 6. I believe being HER2+ will change the treatment plan. From what I have read hormone therapy is not as affective in HRE2+ cancers. What I am hoping for is to be put on Herceptin. I still don't think I will go the chemotherapy route. Have also read that sometimes Texol is given with Herceptin, so am off to look that up. Thanks all for your support. Ruth > > > In a message dated 6/20/2006 4:26:06 P.M. Guest guest Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 I am new here also , this is my first posting. Your story just hit home with me. I went over a year and a half not knowing that I was HER-2. I questioned what my oncologist treatment was, so I made an appt. in Boston and find out right away that I was HER-2 +l, My doctor had miss read the report and I receiving the wrong treatment. needless to say I am know longer with him and now have a wonderful doctor. I'm now on Taxol and herceptin and I feel great. In two months my count has gone from 700 dowm to 260. I will never completly trust a doctor again that they know what is going on . I have learned the hard way ASK QUESTIONS and if they done know ASK another doctor. Best of luck to all of us. I am not a happy camper. Guest guest Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 Actually being postive for HER2, makes the Cancer more aggressive, nothing good about it. Granted there is Herceptin, but it doesn't always work. Guest guest Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 As I understand it, the Herceptin reduced my chances for recurrence to about the same as someone with a less aggressive cancer, so it evened things out. There is also Tykerb now, which can work when Hercepin doesn't. Right now it's only for metastatic women, but within a year or two maybe it will be come like Herceptin and be available for all HER2+ women. - Quote
