Irene,

The only thing that has helped my 6.5 yr olds appetite is periactin.

Even now if he misses his meds, he does not eat as much.

Sorry.

Irene,

is 12 and showed no signs of hunger until we

started Periactin. Four months ago she started GH

injections and the hunger has really kicked in - she

eats more now than ever, but still not great amounts.

my 3yr usually has to be prodded to eat all

day until around 5p.m. then she is an eating machine

until bedtime. Still not large quantities, but

constant grazing.

Donna (mom to and both RSS)

Just had to do a major shopping trip for new clothes

because everything is to short now!!!! :):):)

Dear Irene,

Just last night my husband and were commenting that we were witnessing a

miracle. (just turned 5) now eats with gusto. We stopped the periactin

last May and it almost seemed to help get in tune with natural rythms of

hunger. But, we know that the periactin " saved " him btwn ages 2.5 and 4.5.

I also think that watching his peers eat, being more involved with helping us

cook, buy groceries, etc. has helped him see food and meals as enjoyable, not

the enemy.

He now eats like a normal little boy, even though he is thin. In fact, last

night, he told us (as my husband and I were chatting)... " Please be quiet! I'm

trying to eat here! "

Hi Irene,

We have taken ( 4 2/3) off periactin as suggested by his doctor.

He seems to be holding his own but still seems to do his typical 2 or

3 bites of food then says he is full. He does say he is hungry but

like I said, 2 or 3 bites and he is full. We still need to prod him to

eat while he is playing or watching a video etc.

I think this is the way it is going to be for for quite awhile.

Irene,

Max did not really begin to eat anything much by mouth until he was at least in

3rd grade. Even then it was a struggle. I guess it depends on the child. We

were always told that 7 was the magic number: things seem to get better after

the RSS kids turn 7. Who knows? At least is making progress. That's

what we have to look for. Probably once she is older and more aware of peers,

and cares more about what they say and do, she will attempt more. I know it's

disheartening. Hang in there!

Does hunger really kick in after age of 5?

I have always heard that the RSS appetite usually does get better

with age. I was told that 5 was the turning point. My daughter

is on the brink of her 5th birthday. She still shows NO sign

whatsoever of having an appetite. When she does claim to be hungry,

three bites of anything seems to fill her up.

So, I am wondering if maybe I have the exception to the rule. Do

any of you with older children still have a problem with the

appetite?

Yes, we do! And Tim is 7 yrs old. Sometimes he eats more bites - spaghetti a

bit more lately, and it used to be hot dogs. Yet still fairly trivial an

amount compared to his calorie goal of 120 cal/kg/day. We have been doing

medicine dropper feedings with videos, but we're finally planning to go the

g-tube route (and GH). I'm now looking forward to puberty. I know that's when

I really started liking food - even though I'm not RSS, my mom still fed me the

rest of my dinners though much of childhood... And at puberty, I started

cleaning the cupboards!

Adam had a terrible appetite as a newborn. But it seemed that he wanted to

just sleep more than eat. I never thought of a small appetite. I just

constantly woke and fed him every 2-3 hours in the beginning. Then he was

real late getting a tooth (14 months) but he use to suck back jars of baby

food at each sitting. Then comes the age were all kids (RSS or not) begin to

exercise control over their world, and it's usually via food. They can

choose to eat or not and we can't do much about it. It's a kid thing. Then

later they become better at it, generally. Now my 135 lbs 12 yr. old

daughter who is 5'4 " (huge!!!) is the worst eater in the world. She turns

her nose up at everything. Adam is a grazer and eats constantly. Yesterday I

just reorganized my kitchen so that the bottom drawer has all his snacks,

bowls, cups and munchies so he's not climbing all over the counters. I find

he gets up in the night to eat now, and I'm afraid he'll kill himself, so

now he has his " own " drawer. He thinks this is the cat's meow and is picking

in their all day.

Hi Irene,

I was trying to remember when Charissa began to have a good appetite. Charissa

was on Periactin from age 4 until finishing GHT at age 15. If she happened to

miss her meds I noticed it within a day - really not much appetite. But as she

neared the pre-teen years she seemed to do better & when we finally stopped the

meds she was a little bit chubby, dropped about 8 lbs within 3 months & has

stayed near there for the past 2 years. She looks just right now - not heavy &

not thin - & is exactly on the 25% mark on both height & weight charts.

I never really thought about exactly when she started eating better without

prompting, but here is what I just noticed on her growth charts. She reached 5%

for weight at age 7 (yes, it took 3 years of periactin & 5 years of GHT to do

it!). Between age 7 and 8 she went from 5% to 25% & stayed there until she was

13, and between 13 and 14 she shot up to 50% until the end of GHT, when she

dropped to & stayed at 25%. She reached 5% for height around age 9 (after 5

years of Periactin and 7 years of GHT). She tracked right at 5% for height

until age 13 & then shot up to 25% by age 15, where she remains. We had the

same endo & agressive GH dosage from age 7 - 11 and our current endo (same

agressive type dosage of GH, never did a true " puberty dose " ) from age 11. So I

would guess that she did start eating a little bit bettter between age 7 and 8,

but really started eating well at pre-puberty, age 13 (she didn't start puberty

until 16). I hope this helps - Probably not what you wanted to hear, but

something to look forward to?!?

Chris

mom of Charissa (17 yrs., 5 ft 2.5 in., 108 lbs., RSS(?), GHD, graduate of

Protropin and Periactin, ADD, immature & late puberty, recently re-evaluated by

genetics, ???, Queen of Homework Procrastination,

and (13 yrs., none of the above :)
