Hey Peggy, glad you're figuring it out. It takes awhile. When I started on SCD, I thought salad, fruits and veggies were fine so I ate them with no problem. I found out later that you're suppose to cook everything in the beginning. I think the reasons for this are to gradually ease into the raw stuff which is harder to digest giving your system a break for a while. Then when you do introduce foods, it's important to intro one at a time so you know what causes issues and can avoid those things. I suggest keeping the yogurt. There's magical yogurt faries. Are you using the right yogurt as a started? The most common starter yogurt is at Whole Foods if you're not using a machine. My Albertsons has a bacon with no additives or sugars. Try cooking a Cornish game hen and basting it with honey. Best of everything to you!

On intro diet-think dairy is a problem

Thanks to all who replied to my original post earlier in the week re: just starting diet & getting sicker. 1st of all, it turns out my Welch's grape juice was from concentrate which I think is a no-no, so I just eliminated it. After reading some of your ideas as to what's making me ill, I zoomed in on the dairy connection. I avoid all milk, most cheese, fluid milk, etc. when I'm NOT on the SCDiet because it gives me cramps & D. I am beginning to realize that the DCCC & /or the yogurt is why I'm feeling worse on diet than I do when I don't follow it.Any ideas for an intro diet that doesn't involve the DCCC or the yogurt? Also, doc has put me on Lialda (3-once daily) and Prednisilone to see if that will calm this flare down. I had the thought that may be since I was on steroids that I could get away with skipping forward to a wider variety of foods sooner w/out adverse effects. For instance, do you think I could get away w/ eatting a salad and or some almonds? I mean, the steroids seem to block all symptoms of UC temporarily & I'm thinking I could use them to get me to the nnext level of food quicker. I know, I may be doomed, as I taper off but hopefully enough healing will have taken place to have me be able to tolerate these foods.Just wishful thinking. I'm still starving & am so sick of checken & chick broth and now am elliminating DCCC & yogurt. Thanks for advice,PeggyUC 8 1/2 years

Peggy,

I have been taking Lialda with good results- It helped to put me into remission within 2 months of taking it regularly. I take 2 tablets daily, which is the normal dose. My hope is that with SCD I can wean down to 1 per day and then.. who knows? But, Perhaps you can reintroduce the yogurt when you are over the flare. For now, why not try different proteins? Why are you just eating chicken? Do you have the Grain Free Gourmet cookbook by Jodi Bager and lass? There are a lot of good meal ideas. Even though I don't tolerate almond flour in great quantities, the banana muffins in that cook book taste like pre-SCD muffins and I find I tolerate them incredibly well. Very filling. When I first started taking Lialda, I couldn't eat salad, but now I can.

There's a great meat loaf recipe in one of the grain free cookbooks--I roast asparagus with EVOO salt and fresh lemons squeezed over it and it's well tolerated.

Good luck.

I don't tolerate dairy either, so do SCD without DCCC, yogurt and cheese. I do fine. I'll substitute other liquids for yogurt in muffins and breads, and just don't eat cheese. My meals are more bland, but that's better for my digestion. And goodness knows my joints appreciate the lack of inflammation caused by dairy.

You do need the probiotics found in yogurt, so you will need to find a legal acidophilus supplement. There are a few available by mail-order/online. There is a list of some of them at www.pecanbread.com, and you can search the message archives for past emails listing the legal acidophilus supplements available.
