Guest guest
I don't think a second opinon would help. As frustrating as my conversation with Dr. Stiles was, I have to say that she is just looking out for my best interest. As a transplant patient, I am immunosuppressed and, Heaven forbid, I should be "the one" that has a leak at the anastimosis (where the bowel is joined to the stomach), I could get a very complicated infection which could take my life. I'm sure she's being ultra careful, but I still can't understand her comments about my eating habits not being affected by a Gastric bypass. I didn't get this way simply because of steroids. I had to have consumed too many calories somewhere along the line. The GB would do nothing but help my weight situation, provided everything went well. I'm not so sure I can agree with her opinon about it possibly not helping the diabetes. I guess I shouldn't argue with the doctor's background and expertise. She knows much more than I do! I'm just so sick of the hassel of losing out in life because I have a medical condition. Oh well, as my dear mom always said, "This too shall pass". It just isn't passing quickly enough. Guest guest
Thanks Colleen - it sounds like Dr. Stiles will consult with the surgeons and the SSF Nephrologist (kidney doctor) to see if I really can have the surgery so, no, she didn't completely rule it out. It will depend greatly their opinions and expertise and on if I can keep my glucose level below 200 and lose the required weight. Dr. Stiles told me that if anyone's glucose level is above 200, the surgeons absolutely won't do the surgery. I have a great Nephrologist here at Kaiser Santa Clara who I know will support me and if he feels that it would harm me, believe me, he'd let me know and talk me out of it. He is VERY supportive. Wouldn't trade him for the world. It's all a waiting game. I have to get all the labwork and scans done then Dr. Stiles and I will talk again. I'm sure Dr. Stiles is the best, but just not today, with my attitute at a low altitude. (Not her fault - mine...) I wouldn't want anyone to get the opinion that she's not a good doctor. Thanks again for the support. I'll keep you posted. Tomorrow is another day, Scarlett!! Jane in Cupertino

Guest guest
Hi Jane I can see why you are in the dumps about your visit, and I can see that your upset, it didnt look like she said she would not do it, did she say what she would base her final opinion on ? Guest guest
Hi Jane, How frustrating! I know that you really want to have the surgery and I hope that everything will work out so that you can have it. But, I am glad to hear that Dr. Stiles is being cautious . . . after all, we want you to come through the surgery safely. Grazing can be a problem - it is quite possible to "out-eat" the surgery. If one grazes throughout the day, then the restrictive element of the surgery doesn't provide enough of a control to keep the calorie count down. I know that before I had surgery that I had to prove to myself that I could make some of the changes that would help me succeed. For me, that was giving up sodas, caffeine and fast food. For you . . . well, you might try changing your eating pattern to eliminate grazing. Then, you could assure Dr. Stiles (and yourself) that the RNY would give you the tool that you need. I hope you don't mind my making comment on this - my friend who had surgery shortly before I did was a grazer and still is, so I am concerned about this issue. I look forward to hearing how you are progressing.
