GB and Kidneys

I'm a little discouraged tonight. I have been working with my PCP to get WLS surgery but I have a condition that I don't think the WLS surgeons have dealt with before. I've had a kidney transplant and I am also diabetic and pretty sure that I'm getting more and more insulin resistant. The surgery would definitely take care of the insulin problem, but I'm a little worried about the affect on the kidney. I'm really hoping that the surgeons don't preclude me from the surgery because of my "spare".

So I guess my question is mainly to those on the "Other Side". Did any of you have problems with your kidneys after surgery? I know water consumption is a big deal but I've always been a HUGE water drinker so I don't think that will be a problem. I have to have a water bottle with me at all times. I'm just wondering if the surgery has some sort of affect on kidney function.

This is Sue and to be honest I have never

heard of this question. I can answer the water question because I also

was and I say WAS a big water drinker PRE-op. I easily could drink over a

gallon a day. Now being post op my taste buds have changed and I cannot drink

12 oz. of water a day. I do drink hot tea, remember the tea I was drinking at

the Santa Clara

meeting, BUT I cannot drink plain water. I know I have had a bladder infection

twice since my surgery. I have not had a bladder infection since I was pregnant

and my youngest is 22 yrs. old so that was a long time ago. I have also

heard of many people getting kidney stones along with gall bladder stones. It is

well known we are prone to get them post op. I don’t know what to tell

you. I know a lady which you may be able to talk to and see if she can guide

you along to ask the questions. I need to call her and ask her if it is okay to

give you her email or phone number. Hey try to get to the Santa Clara meeting next Friday and we will

talk about it. Hang in there. I don’t believe they will do the surgery if

you will not benefit from it. If it is too dangerous then they will not do it.

Sue - thanks much for your response to my kidney question. I need to talk to the surgeons to find out how they feel about my case. My nephrologist at Kaiser Santa Clara is all for the surgery so I know I have his support. Bottom line is - I want to do what is best for me overall. I think not having diabetic symptoms and high blood pressure any longer may help my case.

We'll see.
