Hi Diane and welcome.

I have not heard of Kaiser doing other types but there is always

a first or an individual reason as to change. The rny is the one that

is favored. I believe Kaiser chose this one for it is the one with

the best outcome vs recovery and complications. I am not an expert

though. Perhaps some of the others have more to say. As I learn

though I will share the info and my time. Take great care

the central valley of CA. I,ve been reading your posts for about a

week now and have learned much. Thank you. Well, my question to you

all is.....Has anyone persued Kaiser to cover, pay for or contract

out for the wls called distal gastrc bypass with duodenal switch?

I've learned of the various wls and feel the dgb with ds is the right

procedure for me. I think when Kaiser didn't offer rny they would

contract patients out to surgery centers. Thanks for any advice. I'm

sure I'll depend on you as I begin this process with many, many more

questions.

Hi Diane,

I am a fellow Mantecan. There are several of us who belong to this

site who live in the , Manteca & Lathrop areas.

I recently was approved for WLF through Kaiser and will be having my

surgery at the new surgery site in Fremont. To the best of my

knowledge Kaiser does not do the type of surgery you are interested

in having. They only perform the RNY (open or laproscopic). I am

sorry I do not have better news for you. The Health Educator at

Manteca or your Member Services Rep would be the best source for the

most current and correct information.

Best of luck on your journey.

Hi ,

I assume your pcp is at the Manteca clinic (I hope). Dr. Nyguyn? is against wls. He told me I had "to help myself". So now I am going to help myself. I am going to persue surgery. My question then is...Can you tell me which Drs. at the Manteca clinic are wls freindly? I'll have to change my pcp to begin the process. Also, how long did it take you? Beginning to surgery date? My bmi is 42ish and I don't have any major co-morbids...just depression, joints, back , heinie problems, etc.Hmmmmm, weight related?? Any help you could offer would be great. Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane,

First off . . . welcome aboard! I hope that this group proves to be as informative

and supportive to you as it has been for me. This is my home on the internet

because the folks here are wonderful!

I was considering a DS for a while. One of closest friends had decided to

have that surgery, so I was checking it out. I am still not sure whether

a DS or RNY would be better in the long run, but my gut feeling (oh, sorry

about that phrasing) is that the RNY is likely to have less nutritional complications

down the line and fewer embarrassing side-effects over-all. Seriously noxious

out-gassing and diarrhea are common with the DS - although I understand that

they can be somewhat controlled with attention to diet. Anyway . . . I imagine

that you have already considered the various aspects of the surgeries. My

friend had her DS (2 weeks before I had my RNY) and is doing fine. She did

have to self-pay for the surgery. The thing that amazes me is that our weight

loss is so similar - despite the difference in our surgeries and the fact

that she is half my age and doesn't have the mobility problems that I do.

Back to your inquiry . . . back when I was considering a DS, I was told by

Kaiser that they don't do that surgery nor pay to have it done elsewhere.

However, because my BMI was so high - I started at a BMI of 70.9 - my bypass

was longer than many others (150cm rather the usual - which I think is 75cm).

I doubt that the DMHC would insist that Kaiser pay for a DS since an RNY

with a more distal bypass has been shown to be an effective course of treatment.

Sorry about that . . . I know that I felt some disappointment that I didn't

have a choice, unless I wanted to self-pay.

Please, keep asking those questions. And, let us know how you progress.

I look forward to getting to know you.

All the best,

Kay
