I sitting here reading the posts and other internet sites regarding WLS and I have a concern. I'm fairly new at this and really at the beginning of the process. What should I be doing to get myself ready for the surgery and ultimately the change of life-style? I haven't received approval yet so should I be trying to lose weight at this point? Should I be taking vitamins, and if so, what kind? I am attending at least one support group (possibly two soon) so that's covered. I'm working with my PCP to get all the necessary appointments (psychologist, nutritionist, etc.).

I hope this isn't a question that has been asked a million times before.

Thanks!

Welcome, . Check out post #817 for a lot of helpful information about the whole process (you can access it through the group's page at www.groups.yahoo.com

Also check the "files" section, as people have added documents containing helpful information there.

As for the pre-op vitamins, every doctor is different. Mine (Pacific Bariatrics) required vitamin C and a multi, as well as protein shakes, before surgery. Now if you start that ASAP, it sure isn't going to do you any harm (as long as the protein shakes don't contain sugar, and have a fair amount of protein - 30+ grams per serving) in them.

Don't start losing weight until you are weighed in at your initial bariatric surgery orientation. That's when the "clock starts ticking" on their requirement that you lose 10% before surgery. Of course, if you want to lose weight before you are required to do so, it isn't going to hurt you. You will usually be required to lose ANOTHER 10% after the orientation weigh-in, so keep that in mind.

Wow a lot of questions............Where to begin.

1. Wait to lose your 10% until after you see surgeon...they dont

count it until then.

2. Begin exercising now...start slow...start with walking.

3. Give up one thing at a time, pre op, that wont be tolerated after.

4. Research...read....especially good is Barbara 's

book " Finding the thin person inside you "

5. Ask specific questions...they are easier to answer. LOL

6. Drink your water !!!

7. Visit obesityHelp.com and see visuals about surgery

But above all, be patient, it will happen !!

My surgeon took into account what I had lost from the orientation

when they weight us in and the visit with him. Maybe because I had

lost 20 lbs between them. I would ask though.
