Even though a fistula is " ready " for use, it's not as ready as it gets after being used a few times. It will toughen, and it will continue to toughen as time goes by. What happens usually is that at first, the blood vessel spasms a bit, plus, some of the fingers of the fistula hand may get a big numb, as blood is " stolen " from the circulation. This is all normal at first.
