My hair loss started with a few loose strands, then lots of loose

strands ... then when I brushed it would come out in alarming numbers...

its very scarey at first and I had some depressive moments but, I am

here to tell ya that mine stopped and its doing better ... I used a

protein enriched (biotin) shampoo and I tried not to blowdry and style

often because that made it much worse... I also washed my hair less

frequently because I'd lose ALOT of hair during shampooing...

Just my experiences,

I was so afraid of ending up with no hair. .. I kept eating and

drinking protein.. Didn't happend I didn't loose any hair. Thanks

God. It usually happens to people that are not careful with the

diet. You need to take your proteins and viatamins. I'm trying to

recall the extra vitamin I took.. If I can find the bottle somewhere

in my room, I'll posted.. Oh, Oh, BIOTIN??? or BIOCTIN...It really

works.... try it. Just go to a discount store, they should have it...

The Gastric bypass surgeon told me about it.

I was really careful with what I ate and drank---still am for that

matter, but at 8 months out, the hair is still falling out and it

started at 2 months. It's tapered off quite a bit but still coming out.

Thank goodness I have really thick hair and it hasn't been noticeable.

I don't know what started my hair loss 3 years ago and it's been so

long I'll never know. I know that my grandmother had very thin hair and

her sisters did too so it might be hereditary.

The only thing that changed 2-3 months ago was going into this damned

flare after eating broccoli at Thanksgiving. It's like I can't come out

of it. I think I ate something illegal at a restaurant even though I

questioned thoroughly and bypassed on the dressing and that's kept me

in the flare. The last 2 weeks the flare has intensified and so has my

hair loss even though I haven't eaten out and have stayed mostly intro.

I could possibly have a thyroid problem. When my F-I-L did reflexology

on me, my thyroid points were always blown. When I can get to the

doctor, I'm going to do like Jodi suggested and get a full thyroid

panel test done. I had a thyroid test done in my early 20s and it came

back ok, but I'm sure it wasn't a full panel test.

For the last year, I have used shampoos with no SLF. The other day, in

a moment of weakness I bough Herbal Essenses because it's a big

comfort. I'm going to Whole Foods tomorrow to get my regular

shampoo/conditioner and put the Herbel Essenses up because I know it's

bad for me, but my hair condition hasn't worsened or lessened since

starting to use it a couple days ago.

Thanks so much for our input. I'm looking into the PHYTO vitamins and

RF 80 so see if I can afford it. The RF 80 is pretty expensive. Do you

take the PHYTO vitamins? Are you aware if there are any illegal

starches, sugars, or lactose in them? Do you use the PHYTO products?

Thanks again for your help!!!

Hi ,

I had hair loss every time I went on Asacol, it grew back each time I stopped it though. Losing so much weight at the same time however might indicate a thyroid problem which will also cause major hair loss.

Does anyone have a problem with hair loss? I have UC and I take Asacol. My hair is falling out by the hand full. My doc said that is it a side effect of the asacal but when she saw how bad it was....she thought maybe it was malnurishment. I have lost a ton of weight. I hope it grows back, but who knows..

Yeah, it seems to be a cyclical effect for some people, particularly

during flares.

I think zinc helps.

If you are losing significant weight, that probably means you are not

taking in adequate calories.

What foods are you eating, and how much?

Are you keeping a food diary?

Zinc and biotin are good for hair and nails... but not if you aren't

balancing your intake.

I'm eating meats, hard boiled eggs, bannans, spinich,gr beans, cooked apples.and goat yogurt. I have started to gain some weight but it dosen't come on as fast as it comes off. I think it is quite a bit of food. 3 means and 2 to 3 snacks a day.

Yes, I think it is the Asacol, it would start with me around the 3rd or 4th week of taking it and get progressively worse until I was losing handfuls like you said then I would stop the Asacol (it never worked for me anyway, I only took it because the doc insisted)

I take Lialda without any hair loss issues. However, when I had lost a lot of weight due to stress--not eating, I lost hair after I had it chemically straightened, which has since grown back. Malnutrition is a big factor in hair loss.

I don't take any meds now, just SCD (9 months) and yogurt and probiotics. I was on prednisone the first 5 months of the diet and after I weaned off that I've been fine with just the diet.

Biotin!!!

My hair guy is the hairdresser to the STARS! He took one look at my thinning

dome and told me to start taking biotin. I had no clue about the stuff but the

label/Wikipedia talks about it helps the body to metabolize carbohydrates and is

supposed to help with hair and nails. Best o' luck!

Well, you're eating a better variety of food than some!

A woman needs 11 calories per pound of optimum weight to just maintain

her body... that's without any exercise or chores you may

perform.

So, take the weight you want to be and multiply times 11.

Then trot out to Fitday,Com and get a free account and plug in what

you're eating and how much, and see where it falls in the amounts of

foods.

That will give you a starting point.
