Guest guest
Hi Gang: I had a very interesting conversation this afternoon with a gal named Penny from Africa, Kenya to be exact. She come's in to my neighbor who is confined to a wheel chair, and helps her around her apartment. She was curious as to what PLS was, and she asked me if I had ever met any African/American's or any other race of people who had PLS or was it strictly a " white " disease. I was stunned for a moment, and the more I thought about it, I could not honestly give her an answer. So here I am " asking the expert's " . I hope nobody get's offended, but she sure peaked my curiosity. Rita
Guest guest
Rita, I don't know of any PLSers who are also African, or African- American. I was wondering about this about a year ago and I found the following website listing famous people around the world with ALS/MND: http://www.alsmndalliance.org/famous_people.html I do know that Ezzard (Cincinnati boxer) and Hubbie Ledbetter (musician called " Leadbelly " ) were African Americans. It has also been confirmed by his personal physician that Mao tse dung died of ALS. Seems to be a majority of athletes and musicians on this " famous " list. Guest guest
Rita I have been pondering the same questiion but was afraid to ask. I know when I research Bulbar Palsy that the successful acupuncture study had been done in China. It did not specify whether they had pure bulbar palsy or PLS. Also in the article on diagnostistics to differentiate between PLS and ALS I sent a couple of days ago shows the study was done in Cuba and I beleive it listed 20 PLS subjects. Think about that..... 20 PLSers involved in a study on the small island of Cuba. I have known black friends who died of ALS and know that their race tends to accellerate symptoms. Does PLS attack one race more or one not at all? That's still an open question. Guest guest
Eva, I have wondered too if it was more caucasian subjects with PLS & HSP, or if other races were also affected. I have heard that when a black person gets hypertension, diabetes, MS, or diseases such as that, their sx are greatly accelerated. I've always wondered why. Take care, Laurel
Guest guest
This question was posed on the HSP Listserve, and Dr. Fink answered that it hits all races and ethnic groups, (OK, my words now and doesn't spare anyone Except the 12 billion or however many live on Earth now, who didn't draw this short straw, eh). > Eva, > I have wondered too if it was more caucasian subjects with PLS & HSP, or if other races were also affected.
