I do not use it in the house; however, I use it out side dragging hose to water the gardens, etc. I use it to go shopping, being a tourist on vacation, walking around the block, etc. I do not use it in the house. I'm able to use a walker or the walls while inside. Like you, I can not walk to the mail box and back any more. It sure helps my mobility when shopping. Walmart scooters are nasty and almost out of power. I sure use mine in these places. Mine is a three wheel with a very sharp turning radius. I have tipped it over before in the yard. Consider a four wheel scooter, but I do not think it has as sharp of a turning radius. This gives you a starting point. Norton Chair or Scooter?? Well, I guess its time to start thinking about motorized mobility. The last two days I went for a walk (crawl) around our little town block and it totally exhausts me. My legs just don't want to go that far. My wife hangs on to me so I won't fall. She doesn't even trust me to go outside to walk around the house alone (with good reason). I half-fell yesterday in the house. I don't count a fall unless I hit the floor!LOL I landed on a TV and stereo instead. Anyway, I will need something for getting around the yard and short excursions with my wife. Obviously, I will need something indoors in the future, months not years at the current rate of deterioration. I don't want to spend a lot of money for one thing and then need to spend more right away for something else. I need some input on scooters vs chairs. And good brands to look at. I don't want to buy something for less only to end up with a piece of troublesome junk. I've always believed that usually you get the quality you pay for. Also, since I'll be footing the bill without insurance qualification, I would like to just do it once. What should I make sure I get that I'll need now or in the near future? Between getting worse and winter coming, I'm very discouraged. Sorry for crying on your shoulders, but I really hate to dump on my wife any more than I have to. It seems that the less I can do, the less I do, and the less I do, the weaker I get, and the weaker I get, the less I can do...around and around... Enough! Guest guest Posted October 1, 2004 Report Share Posted October 1, 2004 Hi Kirk I also hesitated in getting a scooter or chair, until I rented a scooter on a trip to a Casino in Conn. I was hooked and immediately went home and researched them. I have a Pride Sundancer scooter and love it. It is very sturdy and though it is rather heavy my 2 daughters have no problem taking it apart and putting it in the trunk of their car. My husband takes the seat off and puts it in his truck in one piece. We go to Hawaii every year, my daughter is stationed there in the Air Force, and I take my scooter right up to the door of the plane and then when we land it's waiting for me. I also paid for most of it out of my pocket since I am not eligable for disability because I didn''t have enough work credits when I became disabled. I suggest you find a local dealer and test drive one, that's what I did. I also got an upgraded seat. You can check them out at pridemobility.com they also have a message board. I also want to get a wheelchair so on short trips I can just throw it in the car. Guest guest Posted October 1, 2004 Report Share Posted October 1, 2004 Kirk, I just went through this spring and had settled on the Jazzy 1113 ATS but with my downturn after the surgery (I live in it now) I feel I lucked out. The guy I was working with (ins. paid 1/2) brought me in a demo Vibe by Quantum (I needed something immediately) which is a normal type w/c but made to be used in the home (turns almost as tight as a scooter). I love it and it works very well outside. Since it was a demo I got it for a 1/3 off. The disadvantage is I had to buy a ramp van (used) but my wife and I knew we didn't have a choice. For you the jazzy might be fine but I'm sold on the vibe. What ever you decide get on ebay, I was pricing the 1113 (new around 5000) and found them there (most less then a year) for 800-1500!!! dale ..
