Through this transformation I've had support from someone who might seem

like an " outsider " to some of you... My friend is a person who changed

gender, from female to male, about 3 years ago.

Many of our issues are the same... Both of us:

Felt uncomfortable all our lives in bodies that didn't fit our concept

of ourselves.

Felt pressure to accept our bodies the way they were, and felt guilty

for wanting to change.

Came from subcultures that were conflicted about changing: He came from

the lesbian community, which doesn't always look kindly on butch women

who change gender. I came from the fat community, which struggles with

fat acceptance politics and resents the cultural pressure to be small.

Experienced discrimination and recrimination: Me for being fat, him for

being a lesbian, and now sometimes for being transgender.

Agonized over having transformative surgery/therapies that changed our

bodies to a different configuration.

Are glad we did it.

So if he's " transgender " (also referred to as tranny or MTF, " Male to

Female " ), what's my buzzword? Transize? Transfat? Hahaha, I like that

one!

" We're small, that's all-- get used to it "

Martha:

You have such a way of expressing yourself. Transfat! That is

hilarious.

You know, through my church, I've met a couple transgender people.

And it's funny that I was thinking along the same lines as you: we

have a lot in common, just as you expressed it--wanting to change

something about ourselves that only surgery will fix.

I'm so glad that you have a great friend in someone who understands

the need and power of radical transformation. I don't mean to

minimize a transgender's situation. It's just that the further I get

along in this process the more I find that there are people of all

sizes, genders, etc that feel the same " need " as I did: the need for

acceptance and love.

Thanks for sharing:
