Guest guest
I agree with Dale. Go for the van and wheel chair. Otherwise you end up paying for both. Scooter first and electric wheel chair later. Facts and Philosophy for 2005 Around New Years Day every year I automatically do all this mental pondering. It cleans my psyche so I can charge forward. I thought I would throw some of this mental exercise out to everyone to gather your thoughts and also to prove just because I have blonde hair doesn't mean I'm not a deep thinker. lol I should also state no alcohol or mind altering drug has been used to generate these ponderings. lol First, on a real life issue. I must decide soon whether to spend $1000 for a hitch scooter lift that will make my car too long for any parking space or to go ahead and purchase a wheelchair van for around $30,000. Other options would work if I weren't living solo. Input Please? Now, the deep stuff---Please read them all since in the end they tie back in to PLS Fact - Time magazine reviewed the study which identified 1 of several genes associated with spirituality. There is a follow-up book from the study as well. The scholastic teams are split on the interpretation. Did humans cause gene mutations due to their spiritual practices which resulted in their prodigy having a blueprint to spirituality? OR did a random gene mutation cause this feeling of " something bigger than me " ? AND do the humans without this gene set have a chance of experiencing spirituality? Fact - Within the last month MSNBC reported results of a study done on a group of Tibetian monks who are daily involved in meditation focused on becoming one with the world or feeling empathy for living things as is part of Buddhism This study was done over a number of years with repeated images of their brains. It was proven that the monks were actually changing the morphology of their brains. Specifically the brain area previously identified as controling empathy was larger and showed more activity. The monks have a quicker empathetic response the longer they have been in daily meditation and therefore the more change in brain morphology. Fact - Patients who have a positive mental outlook have been tracked and shown to experience a better prognosis than those lacking the positivity. Such studies have been done repeatedly in different disease states with ALS being one. Better prognosis does not imply cures but in ALS it was tracked to increase in months of quality life. Fact - Stroke patients have been shown to regain substantial use of their stroke-affected limbs by constant unrelenting exercises which demand movement of such limbs. This starts by having the limb moved by external means ie a therapist. Stroke is damage to brain cells regardly of the type of stroke. Ponderance - Since Upper Motor Neurons are located in the brain do we being ones with dysfunction in those UMNs have the ability somehow to change cellular morphology in our brains and improve our lives? Also if our brain is producing these symptoms due to a gene mutation (HSP) do we possess the ability to cause a gene mutation over time to counter these symptoms? I encourage your responses either back to the group or to me personally. And May We All Have a Happy and Positive 2005. Eva in WV
Guest guest
I agree, the van is best. I had a friend who got the rear lift and when it was bad weather he stayed home. Later his arms gave him trouble and he had to buy a van anyway. Donna > > Facts and Philosophy for 2005 > > > > > First, on a real life issue. Guest guest
As some of you know, I have a 95 Chevrolet Conversion Van , and I have had it for 27 payments. I decided to go with this type of van for many reason's. The Dodge Caravan was completely out of my reach (about $60,000)for the conversion type. I had followed the progress of a close friend with MS,has has had both the mini and the conversion van, and he told me the conversion van was more adaptable to his needs. When I had my van converted, I decided to have it fulfill my needs now and be able to accommodate me in the future. I have the lift (to lift my chair and me). I have a remote system so I can go on my own. I have a swivel seat so I can get in and drive. As for the scooter versus the power chair, the scooter (in my opinion)is not as versatile as the chair. There are many places I go that a scooter would be impossible to maneuver, and with y chair it's a piece of cake. To get the van converted to your future needs really save's on the $$$$. I have a lady friend who bought the van first, and when the chair came, the chair didn't fit, and it cost extra $$$ to convert the van to the chair. She said she wished she had listened to me in the first place. So best you do your homework regarding scooter's, chairs and vans. I sure did!!! At the Team/Walk in Lexington this past,Mark Weber saw my van and I think he was impressed as to how it functioned, I wished I had pulled it on the green to demonstrate to the PLSer's ad HSPer's how it functioned. Mark thought it was a good idea, maybe next year. Rita Till next time! Love & Hugs ************************************* Some people succeed in spite of their handicap.
