Pepto Vs Maalox ?

I purchased a bottle of the expensive Maximum Strength Maalox Total Stomach

Relief (about $5.50); for an upset tummy.

When I went to the medicine cabinet I noticed the bottle of Pink Bismuth

(generic Pepto Bismol) sitting beside it.

BOTH bottles read " BISMUTH SUBSALICYLATE " .

So I checked the ingredients on the back of both bottles.

The 12 oz bottle of MAXIMUM Strength Maalox Total Stomach Relief (cost about

$5.50) contains 232 mg of the active ingredient Bismuth Subsalicylate per

Tablespoon.

The 16 oz bottle REGULAR Strength Generic version of Pepto Bismol (cost about

$2.50) contains 262 mg of of the active ingredient Bismuth Subsalicylate per

Tablespoon.

Other ingredients listed on both bottles as " Inactive Ingredients " are for

thickening, color, and flavor.

So why is Maalox so much more expensive than Pepto?

Are we just paying for the name, or does someone know something that I don't?

They charge more because they can. Apparently there are not enough

people reading labels before they buy to make them need to charge.

Also, many people's mentality is that if a product costs more, it

must be better.

One of these days people will really wise-up and learn that those

products only mask symptoms and do nothing to address the root of the

problem. They will become healthy and the market for it will

decline.
