Guest guest
Dale, I have had the same experience. My daughter had gone with a young man for 4 years and give no indication that it was going anywhere. I often thought it was because of me having PLS and his mother had remarried a man who had water on the brain. He saw how much work his mother had to do for his stepfather. He didn't come over very much either. I guess I'll never know my daughter ended the relationship a year and a half ago. She did meet a wonderful caring man, also a teacher like my daughter. Three month later he asked her father for her hand in marriage. Good old fashion guy! They were married this past May. His father had brain cancer but luckily he is OK now. These kinds of things put life into perspective..........................Flora

Guest guest
Exactly Fern, our society doesn't teach us how to handle these things and people say the darndest things. We are never shown what to do for death (thinking back to when my father died I remember all the friends that stopped coming around or would say stuff like " Just keep busy, you'll get over IT " ) Our old self has or is dying and we are different people. I think back over the years and now realize some of the dumb things I said in these situations. Sidebar, after a couple of years my daughter has a boyfriend again. He's a very nice guy and on first meeting me talked to me for about an hour and a half, even with my slurred, slow speech. Then Anne (daughter) told me why they hit it off so well, his father is disabled! dale Re: thanks to everyone for their input > > Thank you everyone for your input. Guest guest
I can't let this one go by without adding my 2¢ worth. The guy Flora is referring to would never have passed the " Dad Test " in a million years. His reluctance to come over had nothing to do with how much water was on his stepfather's brain or his mother's caregiving issues. At one point in that relationship with our daughter, I got him aside and said " I have a shotgun, a shovel and 5 acres out back. Any Questions? " Never saw the old boy after that. Have a great day to everyone...Doug/St. sburg, FL belgium46@... Guest guest
Hi Fern; My name is Doug, from Brooklyn, now in Phoenix. First I was diagnosed in 96, but I saw the first signs in 91. I had 28 years with NYC Transit Authority as an electrician. I also had no help from my union, and my " friends " some I went to High School with were now running the Dept. couldn't come up with a light duty job. I was forced off duty, taken out of service after punching in by my Superintendent because I couldn't climb up a 60' ladder and walk a 6 " wibe beam above a fully functional bus depot. You are just a number. Friends I known from grammer school don't even call, save just a few. A few coworkers had about a 1yr run but nothing from about 99 on. Now for the good news. When I went to the medical for the retirement board, I waited to be seen longer than it took to get an answer. The person I handed my paperwork at the end on your way out, looked at the file and told me to call back when I got home. I did and was told it was approved. As far as SS is concerned as long as you can pack bags part time your not TOTALLY DISABLED. I went to my local office for all the paper work. After 4-5 hours of them seeing I couldn't sit long or stand long and that the pen would fall out of my hand and it took me forever to fill out a short form, I let them see my hands distort in cramps, it was done. I was told to go home to wait for what might be 6 months. Within 2 weeks I had my approval statement. The SS money comes, once approved, 6 months from the last day you worked. The City is in its own dimention so there's no telling how long that will take. If you don't expect anything from people you won't be disappointed. Anything you get you can rejoice over. Good luck and God Bless > Thank you everyone for your input. On an intellectual level I know why > everyone treats me this way; it is not about me but rather about them.
