Welcome to the group. I just joined a couple of months ago. I too am

caring for a husband with this terrible condition. You have come to

the right place. There is a wealth of information here from people

who are willing to share whatever experiences they have had, and I am

grateful to every one of them. Hope your hubby is feeling better, and

keep posting.

No, Mike did not go to OSU. He has always gone to Riverside

Methodist Hospital. But we did not have a great experience with

doctors there either. I am not sure how far of a drive Indy is for

you, but Dr. Darwin Conwell at the Cleveland Clinic is wonderful!!

If you ever feel you need a second opinion let us know and we can

give you his phone number. A doctor a Riverside initially treated

his acute attack and felt Mike was just looking for drugs when he

continued to have pain and additional symptoms. The first time we

went to Cleveland it took the doctor 2 minutes to tell us Mike had a

stricture in the tail end of the pancreas (which he found on the

origianl CT scan) Let me tell you, Mike and I were quite upset that

he suffered for over a year unnecessarily. Anyway, thanks so much

for your warm welcome.

It'd be great if we had ULTIMATE control over where we stop, but we don't

always. So, fi you reach a size 6, will you panic? Since you're 1 yr, you could

keep on moving. Tell your family not to panic. When you're done, you're done and

there you are, except for a little bounceback. Gotta stabilize and get muscle

back under your skin and it rounds you out a little, but not in a bad way.

Heck, the change is part of the FUN! LOL!

Heh heh heh I know what you mean. My family thinks I'm too skinny (at just

about 170 lbs, a little over 190 lost!). My mom told me I should start eating

more...my doc says I still have 15 lbs to go :)

I think I am fine where I am!

Lilyann,

Medical College of Georgia and Mayo Clinic in ville, FL are the only big

names that I know of in that area. Both have movement disorder specialists.

However, if you have a good family doctor who knows you and is willing to work

with you, that could work well also. There are so many people on the list who

know the medicines used, that you can tell your doctor and they could work on

adjusting the meds with you. Be SURE you only add or delete one medicine at a

time to allow for interactions and side effects to show up. That lets you know

which medicine is causing problems.

I seem to remember someone that was living in SE Georgia. Maybe you will get

more answers from people in the area.

Take care, Bill and Charlotte Werre in Herndon, VA, USA

Hi Hillary,

Well, I'd like to think I'm still " remotely close " to 19! ;) I'm a

24 year-old woman with RSS. As Ken mentioned, there is another

yahoogroup where a few (13 so far) of us RSS adults (ages 13 to 40-

something) have been chatting. It's called RSS-People; we'd love to

hear from you there! (you should be able to sign up for it the same

way you did for this one -- just go to groups.yahoo.com and search

for RSS-People)

Also, feel free to email me directly at hu99am43@...

Thank you Betty for your answer, sorry to write back this late ( we had

visitors over from overseas)

Just for your info. Maerega (my daughter who has RSS) is 29 months, 76 cm

and weight 8065 grams (so a bit over 8kg) and thank you for writing it in cm

and kg because I do not understand inches and pounds (I always have to get

the calculator out!!!)

Thanks again, and I will be trying to read all the messages that come in

every day although I probably read them once a week as I am busy with my 3

kiddies in the daytime.

Hello Joan,

thank you for your reply. Maerega is 29mths old, 76 cms and 8kg (yep get the

old calculator out).

Did your son have problems with talking and walking when he was younger. Is

2nd grade normal for a 7 year old. Sorry to ask you this but the school

system in Holland is different.

Maerega has physiotherapy and is learning how to walk. She has not had any

speach lessons, the doctor tells us to wait until she is 3 yrs old. Any

experience?

Thanks again, Simone Price, mother to Connor (5 yrs old), Maerega (29 mths

RSS), Daron (10 mths old)

Hi! My son Ian is 7y he's 43inches and 32pounds. He started using growth

hormone just ten months ago, so far is helping his growth rate. He's a

healthy boy and super energetic, he just started in 2nd grade.

I joint this group just weeks ago and has been really helpful, knowing

that you're not alone. So I now you'll like here too.

Simone-

I thought I would respond to your question about what

age to start speech therapy (ST). My son Dominic,

started ST at 20 months old and has made vast

improvements. We are thrilled with the progress!

Here in the US, there is a free program called Early

Intervention or Birth -3 (different states refer to it

differently). Anyway, we wanted to get him in this

program early instead of wait until he was 3. Good

luck!

Hi Mimi!

Welcome to the list... I, too have an almost 4 1/2 year old RSS

And, we'll all be here to support one another through these times!

Hi Mimi

Welcome to the group. Yes, I think you'll find your daughter will do fine.

Many people on the list have done different things when the kids begin

school. Some go in and have a parent to class chat about the disorder (one

child actually was afraid he could " catch " RSS) other parents leave

everything alone. I am of the belief, personally, to leave well enough

alone. The teachers are well trained to deal with " differences " (whether

it's colour, handicap, glasses, or size) that they do a fine job making the

children all feel equal. But others feel differently. You'll hear both sides

here.

I find that at the young age, the worst thing that happens is that the other

kids " baby " our RSS kids. Adam had 2 or 3 girls that followed him around

everywhere and carried him and helped him with his shoes and all of that. Of

course the teacher put the stop to that right away. She just reinforced that

Adam was 4, and he can do his shoes, his snack or walk all by himself. She

was a fabulous teacher.

Have you had a chance to check out the Magic Foundation yet?

www.magicfoundation.org

has " brochures " on various growth disorders. You can go and print up the

information on RSS, in case you'd like to give it to your daughter's

teacher. And there is also a section to join, for a fee, and become a

member. It has a list serve like this one, and produces newsletters, and is

a great source of information and help when dealing with insurance

companies, etc. etc.

Again. Welcome.

Debby

12.

Welcome Alice!

Hello all,

My name is Alice, and I had an open RNY on 4/25/00, 15 months ago, at

Newton Wellesley Hospital in MA, with Dr. Bruce Thayer. I'm 30 years

old, 5'4, and started at 236# with a BMI of 40. I lost most of my

weight in the first 7 months, and have been maintaining my weight at

152# since then.

I was lucky to have no complications and to tolerate all foods in

moderation. At this point, I eat like a normal person. I try to focus

on protein, but I pretty much eat a little of everything, and still

find myself addicted to carbs. I worry about the amount I can eat, as

I'm sure most of you do.

I rarely exercise, as I STILL have a huge phobia about it, but I hope

to start a routine this winter. At 152#, I'm still in a size 14, and I

would like to be smaller. 14 is just too close to plus size for my

taste.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to being a part of this group.

Hi to all!

This is my first time communicating, but I have followed closely most of

your letters.

I am on my second year of misery and nothing is helping. Mostly heat and

cold urticaria. Sometimes pressure sets them off also. I have taken pred.

but this is not good and I know it. Atarax is great at night till I need to

get up and I can barely communicate the first two hours. I noticed my body

temp and when it deviates set off a huge amount of these. Any suggestions on

keeping my temp norm. Are there any meds for this?

Hi!

I'm from Glendale, CA. My hives started two years ago and have been a torment since. I use your interactions for comfort at times when the hives are significant and I just want to hide. They travel from my torso to my face. Last week my left eye shut completely. Today, my forehead is huge from them. I am forty and feel like I am aging more rapidly due to these constant elevated bumps.. The cold and heat trigger most, sometimes pressure, and possible something I ingest. Thanks for being here.
