Guest guest
Someone told me that Dr. Tanaka is a real stickler for at least some weight loss before surgery. That may be a rumour, I don't know. But, this may just be something they require on an individual basis. They were having me do additional testing before scheduling my surgery, so I guess the additional weight loss just made sense, and it certainly didn't hurt! :-) Sandi H. > > Hi Sandi, > > At the lecture I went to, given by one of the surgeons from Pacific > Bariatrics, he said they are not the one that requires the 10% weight loss. Guest guest
Cat, I do too. Loosing the weight before surgery is definitely a good idea. But I do believe this is something the doctors/surgeons should apply on an individual basis. I do understand that there are some people who just have a very hard time loosing on their own. If someone is following the protocols, diet & exercises as best as they can and still cannot loose any weight, surgery without loosing any weight might be worth the risk. As, in the case of someone I knew, she might have died from the surgery (without loosing weight first) but she surely died without it. --Sandi H. > Hi Sandi, > > Actually, I think the weight loss before surgery is a great idea. Guest guest
I don't know if you read my previous post (probably several weeks ago, or so) about my sister. She was only 4 foot 9 inches tall, and weighed at least 280 pounds. Her BMI was about 61, where I calculated your sister's BMI was 88. My sister, who hadn't been able to have any weight loss surgery at all died at the age of 52 years old due to complications from obesity. (She died May 1st, 2004.) She had been on oxygen for at least 5 years, had kidney damage and an underactive thyroid. I don't think my sister had enough support really close to her on a daily basis. She was never married, never had any children and had to take care of our dad until we put him in a care home. She had a medical retirement (because of the lung damage) and did her best to help me watch our dad while he was in the convalescant home. We visited him once a week. I do have support at home. I've been married for 24 years to a wonderful supportive man, we have a grown daughter and I have lots of reasons to keep working on making myself healthier. Also, I'm doing partially this in memory of my sister. I offer my sympathy to you for the loss of your sister. I really wish you lots of success in your weight loss. --Sandi H. > > > Hi Sandi, > > > > > > Actually, I think the weight loss before surgery is a great idea. > >It makes a lot of sense. > > > > > > Cat
Guest guest
Keep up the good work Kristie. Also, you may have to follow up with the dietician to make sure everything is done in a timely manner. Your patience will be rewarded! D 13 days 'til surgery > Just wanted to give an update to my steps. I have attended my Gastric Bypass Overview class which is considered the appt with the Dietician. I have called the nurse at my PCP and my file is in from the psych eval. All I am waiting for now is the dietician to fill out her paperwork make sure it gets with my file. (Estimated at 30 days) After this is done my packet can be sent off. The dietician informed us that Modesto people go to Fremont. So at least this portion is done and I can get my packet off. The nurse at my PCP is really excited as am I. Just wanted to send out an update. I just want to say thank you to everyone in this group. I don't post much but I read daily and I have gained more knowledge than I ever thought I would have. > Kristie > Ripon > > > > From: CrazyT <crazyt1020@y...> > > Date: 2004/11/18 Thu AM 02:05:33 GMT > > To: gastric-bypass-support-kaiser-patients > > Subject: Re: Re: 10% weight loss > > > >
