Can I ask about a > few foods as to whether they are legal and if there is an easy substitute > for them? Welcome and Owen! The sugar cured bacon would be a problem for Owen as it feeds bad gut bugs. Since I am in Canada, other parents will suggest some tasty U.S. legal brands of bacon. The " less salt " varieties are often sugar free. That also applies to excluding maple syrup too. Sigh, but I find sugar free bacon crisply done is delicious.I put it next to pancakes or blintzes and a little of the honey I use for syrup sweetens it up.. The spices in Eden sauce could also be a problem. See: http://www.pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#homemade (Home made versus store bought) We make our own great tomato sauce and ketchup. See BTVC and the Pecanbread recipe site. Organic does not always mean SCD compliant although there are lots of legal organic foods. I use organic as much as possible-- on SCD it is not a requirement but is certainly desirable. Our favorites here are squash chips and carrot curls. It's harder to crisp the zucchini but we make excellent " noodles' with it. I have even made beet chips. I fry as I don't have a dehydrator and I also bake chips. Which bread recipe are you using? BTW: Have you followed the " intro diet " first? It is always wise. Carol F.
Guest guest
The only legal bacon we have found is Gwaltney brand and we get it at Super Wal-Mart. It's not organic but it is legal and is yummy. Robbie Hi! I'm , mom to Owen, 3 1/2 years old, mild to moderate autism, and Jordyn, 9 mos., so far NT. We have been GFCF for over a year now with limited improvement. Gut bugs, bacteria, and yeast have been atrocious for Owen so we're excited, albeit overwhelmed, to be starting the SCD. Can I ask about a few foods as to whether they are legal and if there is an easy substitute for them? 1. Wellshire Farms dry-rubbed bacon and turkey bacon? I know they are cured with raw sugar, but is it OK sometimes? 2. Eden Organic pasta/pizza sauce? It's in a can but label says it only contains pureed organic tomatoes and several organic spices. 3. What's the best crunchy type of chip to make? I was thinking of zucchini chips. Would they be best deep fried or made in the dehydrator. 4. The bread is so crumbly, basic bread recipe. Anything I can do to help? Thanks so much! , mom to Owen, 3 1/2 SCD - brand new!

The problem with " spices " as listed is the potential for cornstarch or other ingredients to be added. There is a " 2% " rule I'm sure you will hear more about that says ingredients that make up less than 2% of the total by weight or volume do not need to be added on list of ingredients. Since we are talking about healing on the molecular level every little bit really does count. Just make your own. It will take longer but you can get the family to join in and make it a " Little House on the Prairie " affair! > 3. What's the best crunchy type of chip to make? I was thinking of > zucchini chips. Would they be best deep fried or made in the dehydrator. We make the carrot chips all the time. We have a deep fryer from Walmart that is the most used appliance in my kitchen. My suggestion is to use the peeler to slice the carrots, otherwise they are too thick to get crisp and they just get soggy. Sprinkle on sea salt, wait for them to cool (they will crisp as they cool) and enjoy! Helen, mom to (9, ASD, SCD 4/04),
Guest guest
Welcome ! I have had the best success with the flatbread/mixed nut pancake recipe from the pecanbread website. I leave out the vanilla and reduce the honey then bake it in a parchment lined cookie sheet. AFter baking, I cut it into squares and make sandwiches out of it. Sam loves it; he eats grilled cheese, peanut butter and tuna sandwiches on it just fine. It's a life saver! I need to make a batch for our camping trip next week. Chrystee Sam SCD 6 months > 4. It's in a can but label says > it only contains pureed organic tomatoes and several organic spices. 'Spices' can also mean salicylates/phenolic items, natural or organic glutamate sources, organic amine compounds, and other things which might cause problems in very sensitive people even if it isn't a starch or sugar. I do some product research here and there and it is really interesting what ends up in the final package. For most typical people this isn't an issue, but if you happen to have a sensitivity to something, or trying to deal with a particular health issue, it becomes a problem. .
