Thanks for your helpful replies.

When I first asked the doctor to do folic acid and B12 tests, he ordered a serum

test, and both came back sky high. Then I requested a Metamatrix ION test which

measures RBC folic acid ( low )and urine MMA( normal). MetaMatrix ION report

includes a recommended custom multiple vitamin formula with 600IU( I think?) of

folic acid, and some higher than normal amount of B12, but very low B2 ( only 5

mg). It did not seem to help much. My doctor is not nutritional oriented, he

ordered the ION test as a favor.

From your experiences, I think I should increase folic acid a lot and do not

worry about B12 for a while. But for large amount of folic acid, don't we need a

prescription? Is Folinic acid ( from Thorne?) required for better utilization?

How do you even know what tests to have done or ask for?

No, you do not need a prescription for folic acid. All you need to do is

take more than one folic acid tablet, and for those who are already

displaying an anemia in the red blood cells, 600 IUs or 600 mcgs is not

enough. That's for those who are just " on the edge " or are barely short on

it. Once anemia of the blood cells has displayed with this, we are at a

very dangerous point, and it needs to be corrected very rapidly and with a

large amt, like right now. People can be in a deficit for yrs, yet may not

yet have lost the value of the RBCs, so, when this happens, it's been going

on way too long. I very carefully researched how much to take for an actual

anemia, and every source that I saw said around 1000 or so over about a 3

month period, then test again. You would NOT want to keep taking a huge amt

of this, except in these anemic cases, or, as with Jamy, an inborn error of

metabolism. After the anemia is corrected, then, I'm thinking that many of

the normal recommendations for folic acid intake, just for supplementing, is

around 600 to 800 mcgs. I would take the B12, though, at the same time (if

you have no B12 absorption problems), but you wouldn't need to take beyond

500 mcgs of that with anemia for this nutrient. This is because, IF a B12

problem develops, folic acid can " cover up " a B12 anemia, and though the

RBCs look good, the neurological damage of B12 anemia continues. Folic acid

has to do with many things, but the things that come to mind for me are hair

growth and brain damage, and that isn't only to the unborn child, it's also

to us.

Many many thanks!!

So, 1000 mcg of folic acid and 500 mcg of B12 are good for three months trial to

see if it helps. I will give it a try. I still don't understand why the serum

folic acid is sky high, is there a utilization problem? Should I use certain

form of folic acid?

Should I take it away from my antibiotics?
