Guest guest
hi i am so confused on how to proceed with the adding of foods. here's what we are doing. . . . we began the intro diet on july 23 (with 2 out of 3 kids). I had a problem for a while learning to make yogurt correctly (SCD- style) and then they ( or at least one of them) had a reaction to the yogurt. so we stopped that on 8/1 and they were both doing well. i say well but one of them was having black stools at which time someone on this list told me could be fine and normal for starting out on SCD. i think the difficulty is doing 2 children at once and trying to get everyone responding well before moving forward. so now i have one child mostly constipated and the other tending toward diarhea. if i could get them to be on the same cycle that would be helpful. i am still using culturelle (or maybe put it back into diet because the constipation in the child with the yeast problem scared me) and i was waiting for the arrival of custom probiotics acidophilus. now i have some but if i dont have a regular and healthy stool i dont know how i will be able to adjust the dose. here's the list of foods that they have been eating so far with me slowly introducing foods after checking the website www.pecanbread.com. baked chicken fish baked with mayo on it shrimp boiled plain or with mayo carrots diluted juice (welches 100% grape or apple cider) bananas ripe - howmany black spots should there be on them? perhaps they are not ripe enough when i am using them. , eggs - boiled & fried olive oil, saflower oil, ghee beef - baked, broiled or barbequed *cooked plums *baked or boiled apples *squash cooked honey ground pepper (maybe not ready for this yet) pork - baked merangues made with honey (honey brand important here?) ketchup made from tomato juice (perhaps they werent ready for this and is there a specific brand of tomato juice used or do most people make themselves from tomatoes?) *peeled and deseeded. oh and what would you do for a headache in a child on SCD? is there a legal ibuprofen or tylenol? any insight would be greatly appreciated, donna
Guest guest
Donna, You likely know that Culturelle is not legal but have opted to use it. This is a personal decision of course, but it can impede progress. Stopping the yogurt was appropriate and you can reintroduce it at a later date. Some people can be sensitive to pepper, tomatoes and vinegar. I have my pharamacy compound acetominephin (Tylenol) without starch or lactose and use it for headache or pain but so rarely that one script can last for many months. I am not sure what you mean about being on the same cycle but if you are referring to the stages suggested as a guideline for introducing foods, you will find this info on the Pecanbread website. Although it is not mandatory and does not appear in BTVC, many parents have found this helpful if they were not sure when to phase in various foods. If you are using vinegar to make the mayo, lemon juice might be better. It's a personal trial and error thing. Your menu sounds quite varied and appetizing overall. Carol F. Guest guest
" then they ( or at least one of them) had a reaction to the yogurt. so we stopped that on 8/1 " --> Could you please tell us what type of yogurt you made, what starter you used and how much yogurt you gave them the first day and how much you had worked up to giving them before you quit? " if i could get them to be on the same cycle that would be helpful. " --> Unless they had he exact same reason for the onset of their problems, it's not likely that you can get them on the exact same cycle. They could have different strains of bad guys. One could be dealing with more yeast, the other more bacteria. So, I would just suggest a food log with a place for comments about stool and behavior for each one of them so that you can keep track of things without feeling like you are losing your mind. " i am still using culturelle (or maybe put it back into diet because the constipation in the child with the yeast problem scared me) and i was waiting for the arrival of custom probiotics acidophilus. now i have some but if i dont have a regular and healthy stool i dont know how i will be able to adjust the dose. " --> The only thing I can think of is to just stop the Culturelle and just begin using the Acidophilus. " here's the list of foods that they have been eating so far " --> Are you making the mayo yourself? --> The bananas should have no green left on the tips and need to be lightly spotted. --> What does " barbequed " mean to you? That you cooked it on a grill or that you basted/marinated it in a BBQ sauce? -->Honey brand- I get honey from the HFS that I know came from local beekeepers. Maybe others can list the brands that they use. --> I don't see many veggies on this list. Will your boys not eat veggies? Green beans, zucchini, avocado, spinach? You have a really nice variety of meats, but I would really work on getting some veggies into them. Eating a lot of protein is not optimal either. --> Are you seeing undigested food in their stools? Also, when you say D. what does that mean to you? Is the stool so runny that it is pure liquid or is it just loose and unformed. Same question for the C. Is he having a hard time passing the stool? Does it seem painful? Or is it just very firm? Jody mom to -5 and -7 SCD 18 months
