Guest guest
Not getting much response on the other lists and thought it was somewhat appropriate here. My son has been SCD since FEB.Prior to that he was GFCF and other f's, for 20 months or so. We just got back a comprehensive stool analysis test in which things look much better than they did 2 yrs ago, but it shows occult blood as a positive. I've read the possibilities for this but would like to know specifically what the next steps are following this result. Also would like to know if anyone here knows how this relates to the measles in the gut problems found in some ASD kids. Guest guest
Hi Lynn, Congrats on getting overall results with SCD. As for the occult blood. There are many things that can cause the occult blood in your results (including NSAIDs, raw fruit and veggies, or taking lots of vitamin C etc. from http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH/WSIHW000/9339/23942.html ) Depending on the amounts of occult blood etc. you may want to discuss it with your doctor, especially if he is showing signs of anemia. As pertains to SCD how are his bm's and what is he eating? I am not sure how this relates to the measle problem, maybe other parents will write in. Guest guest
Usually the parents get these tests before the doctor, so I decided to get a home test and see how things look with a more monitored diet. He has been taken Vit C but I thought I'd read that it was no C that would affect it for a positive. Red meat is also a possibility. The smear test I did on his stool this morning did not have any occult blood which eased my mind a bit. However we have been doing some goat cheese. I have not yet made the goat yogurt again. It is possible that the goat cheese affected him as he is highly reactive to casein. I can't really say the results that are good are from SCD, as the test we had before was pre-GFCF and we have done loads since then. His stools have become better colored since SCD and are usually formed, hard to tell since he is still going in pull ups if we don't offer the toilet as an option at the right time. He has had some looser stools but not runny and some perfect. He has been having less BM's as well. Initially I saw some language with SCD start, in particular goat yogurt, but that's not making any connection at this time. I will probably make the goat yogurt again in a little while and see how it goes. b12 shots seem to be helping a little. Personally I think I'm still missing something with him. I was a bit liberal with SCD, not realizing when first starting that the ASD kids were doing better with a certain food order. I went back and redid the intro as well as taking away the nut flours. We are back into some nut flours and I've experimented with a few more cooked fruits and about to attempt blueberries on him again. I took all sugars away temporarily (about 1 month) while fighting yeast hard. I'm only giving him small amounts of honey about once every 2 wks at this time or I'd make the nut yogurt. I introduced bread (almond bread) to him in an attempt to wean him into sandwiches. He's never eaten normal food as we went straight from a baby food addiction to vanilla custard to pureed GFCF literally given to him in droppers. He has come a LONG way in 2 years but we have further to go still. Thanks for you input, Lynn Austin 4 yrs LCA and ASD, non-verbal and blind > Hi Lynn, > > Congrats on getting overall results with SCD. > > As for the occult blood. Guest guest
Hi Lynn, All the sites I checked out said (about 250mg of) vitamin C could affect the results. Other foods such as turnips, horseradish, beets and radishes, carrots, broccoli cauliflower, cabbage etc. and iron supplements can also affect the results. > Usually the parents get these tests before the doctor, so I decided > to get a home test and see how things look with a more monitored > diet. Guest guest
IT could be the vitamin C then. He had none in his body and we are supplementing quite a bit, per dr's request. HE may have also had broccoli that day. Not sure. Thanks, Lynn > Hi Lynn, > > All the sites I checked out said (about 250mg of) vitamin C could > affect the results.
