Hi ,

If my iron is low but the doctor thinks it's normal, can I just use

any iron in the health food store to build up the ferritin level? I

*think* I have seen where some folks have a prescription for low iron

levels but I'm not sure. I don't think he would prescribe anything

since he thinks they are normal. Also, would dark circles under my

eyes be a sign of this? I look like death warmed over and hate to

even leave my house! I put make up on but it doesn't cover the dark

circles.

Thanks so much!

Molly

There's a prescription iron product, but you don't need a prescription

to get it, if that makes any sense. The tablets have 325 mg iron, and

you take three a day. The pharmacist will usually have it behind the

counter.

Anemia makes your skin pale, which allows the veins under the skin to

show through, thus the dark circles. Best thing to cover them is *green*

concealer from the beauty supply store. Regular foundation on top of

that, of course.

Thanks for the information, . I've never heard of green

concealer but I'll sure look for it.

Yes, the dark circles can definitely be a sign of low iron, but are also a

sign of low thyroid, and sometimes, low adrenal reserve. Iron doesn't have

to be prescribed. I don't have to take iron, but some of the other members

here do, so they could probably advise you best on this. I think that many

are taking 2 x's a day of ferrous sulphate (325 mgs each dose), but some are

taking more or less of that. There are other forms of iron. For low iron,

I don't think that the little minute amts of 18 mgs are sufficient to

recover. I am a lean red meat eater, almost every single day.
