Strange and wonderful thing about opiates: if you're in pain, they don't whack

you. (Or, at least, they shouldn't.) They just make the pain go away so you can

function. If you get sleepy, you've taken more than you need. You might try

going ahead with your Aleve in the morning as a precaution, then pop a Vicodin

the minute you actually notice the foot pain coming on. You should get 4-6 hours

of pain-free work out of a dose.

I start with a small dose, then wait an hour. If I'm still in pain, then I take

a little more -- easing into it so I don't overdo and knock myself out.

I have a weird reaction to Vicodin: if I take it before bed, it wires me, and I

sleep all jangly (if at all). Fortunately, I have a doctor who will also

prescribe Dilaudid (hydromorphone) for night use, or when the pain goes beyond

the reach of mere Vicodin. Very sweet dreams on that one.

Can also second the motion on the hot/ice footbath thing. When I was in high

school, I worked in a diner. Used to come home with horribly sore feet. I

remember one day when I came home in misery, my mom marched me into the

bathroom, where the sink was full of ice. She commanded me to get up on the

bathroom counter and pop my feet in the ice.

I thought she was crazy.

After about 30 seconds, I was *sure* of it.

And then, after about three minutes, I realized that my mother was a freaking

genius. The feet stopped hurting. I've never forgotten how *good* they felt.

Damn. It works.

Sara, you're not alone...vicodin or tramadol both have this effect on both

my husband and myself. I lie awake for hours, happy enough to be doing so,

but not sleeping. I take tramadol in the daytime for overall muscle aches

and foot aches.

pain is coming back just this last week - and now I remember how I couldn't even

walk in the morning - I had to have shoes right by my bed and then tie them

tight just to be able to walk because of the pain.............other then being

in treatment nothing helped for my foot pain........I feel for you !!!  The

pain is terrible!!!!  Diane :)

Thanks!  I was going to try an epson salt bath tonight to see if it helps.  It

is so difficut to be on your feet all day and then have the pain.  When I wake

up in the morning, I can barely walk, it's so painful!  Lyme is horrible!!!!!!

a,

Try daily alternating hot and ice cold foot baths. I have had bartonella for

about 16 years and I have some numbness, but it has never progressed to the pain

you describe. Several people in my lyme support group swear by an epsom salt

bath and then alternating their feet between that warm bathwater and a tub of

ice-water, ending with the ice water.

The diabetic elastic socks also help. I have found that the heavy duty elastic

hosiery is overkill, but the diabetic socks provide just enough support.

Warning, they are expensive.

Kathleen

I have so much pain in my feet. Feels like my bones burn in the tops and sides

of my feet. I work at Half Price Books and am on my feet all day long...it is

worse if I sit down and get back up...can barely walk. Anyone experience this?

Maybe it's not Lyme, but Fibromyalgia?

It's good to know I'm not alone, because whenever I discuss this with my GP he

looks at me like there are lobsters crawling out of my ears.

Ha.

" Happy enough to be doing so. " Yes. I love my bed. I'm lying there, blissfully

pain-free, relaxed and happy. The only problem: I don't sleep.

The only upside to this is that the best writing I've ever done in my career is

the stuff that hits me at 2 am, and then I sit right up and catch it while it's

fresh. (I may still be at the keyboard when the sun comes up.) If I roll over

and go back to sleep, by morning, it's gone. If I'm awake anyway, I'm at least

more amenable to getting up and catching the good stuff while it's still fresh

and hot.

No, I'm not being treated for anything right now.  I have to find a new doctor,

as my doctor that discovered I had Lyme was so sick herself that she had to

close her practice!  I am going to try to find another doctor.

After you take the epsom salt bath, be sure you put your feet in ice

water--alternating between the warm bath and the ice water. End with ice water.

If you haven't taken an epsom salt bath recently, be sure you begin with a half

dose because some people herx from epsom salt baths.

I get my tramadol from my LLMD. It seems milder with fewer side effects (less

constipation) than straight codeine, for me anyway, but it relieves my pain most

of the time. I actually take 1/2 of a pill first and then if the relief is not

enough I take another 1/2 pill. Often it is enough because the waves of

pain/sickness sometimes just peak at a certain part of the day (most often early

afternoon to late afternoon) and by the time the tramadol wears off, I seem

better. Also, I am a big believer in interrupting pain before it gets too

bad...a lot of my pain is musculoskeletal and the slight interruption seems to

allow muscles to relax/recover a bit. If I wait too long to take something, then

the pain often intensifies to a level where the eventual pain reliever doesn't

help so much.

I have no difficulties however with addiction issues. On days when I have no

pain it doesn't occur to me to take anything. That said, I take tramadol at

least half the time.

Sara, you're not alone...vicodin or tramadol both have this effect on both

my husband and myself. I lie awake for hours, happy enough to be doing so,

but not sleeping. I take tramadol in the daytime for overall muscle aches

and foot aches.

I have horrible foot pain too. Mine is much worse on the bottoms of my feet. A

burning, tingling pain. I need to check into Bartonella. So far I've only been

treated for Lyme.

I take Tramadol also. It really doesn't seem to help me all that much. Just

takes the edge off really bad pain.

Why do doctors not want patients on Tramadol?

They are saying it could be addictive and I shouldn't be on it??  I told them

that's crap - yes, it takes  the edge off - but I am grateful for that :)

told me I have to go to a pain center...................

You should see a Podiatrist ( foot doctor ) as foot pain could be caused by many

different problems which can be corrected. Bob

When I was in treatment for bart my foot pain was almost gone - yes, my soles

hurt so bad and side and top - felt like someone hit them with a bat - only way

I could explain the pain..........but with the right treatment for me with bart

the foot pain went away.....and that itself was a true miracle :)  good luck

and get a good LLMD!!!!
