Guest guest Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 So I go to my new rheumy today. Well he says I don't have RA per say but I have mixed connective tissue disease. Ok so what does that mean for the AP? Every time I turn around they are telling me something different. I could just cry and don't know what to think anymore. I just want to throw all the meds in the trash and wait until I die. He agreed to let me off the Methotrexate since I think it isnt working but he wants to start me on Plaquenil. He isn't big on the AP. Just when I think I have RA now I am told all this. I don't know what to do now. Quote
Guest guest Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 With all due respect, regarding the below response is not necessarily helpful advice. I have been corresponding w/ by personal email & she is diagnosed w/a disease that has potential complications including pulmonary hypertension & fibrosis. I believe her disease diagnosis to be accurate based on her symptoms & labs. While I do advocate experimenting w/Minocin, it is NOT prudent advice to tell this young woman that she should throw away the Dr.'s script. Placquenil is a well tolerated drug w/a good safety profile & provides enormous benefit which the pt. needs right now. I would suggest that once she achieves stabilization w/the Placquenil, that she then could take Minocin. Achieving a clinical remission within the 1st 2 years after diagnosis is very important w/this disease & in my humble opinion, Placquenil probably gives her the best shot. I realize that you're just trying to calm her fears, but be careful about what advice you dispense & she should not take a medication labeled for someone else. I'm glad you have achieved such good results for whatever rheumatic disorder you have & I definitely think the infectious theory needs explored. However, Minocin is still not a proven treatment for MCTD, yet Placquenil is. Hi, This is why I said in my earlier email not to worry about labels. So many of them don't know what the heck they are doing so don't trust they know it all. They are winging it. They give you a label and that lets them know which meds to write the script for. They don't always know this but they are. Don't let this guy mess with your head; you are going to be OK. But you do need to continue your quest to get the Minocin. If you can get the Minocin it will all change. So that's all I'd try to do .... get that Minocin. You may have to play along; i.e., take the piece of paper/RX for Plaquenil to placate him; don't fill it; call him in a week and tell him it makes you deathly ill; read about the side effects and tell him you got a couple of them .... and tell him to call in an RX for Minocin since you've tried all his meds and they don't work for you. And if he won't help you tell him you are going elsewhere ... and go to an internist to see if you get better results. ... another thought - do any of your kids have acne? See if you can get Mino for them and then take it yourself. Fight dirty. Do whatever you need to get the Mino. I'm not kidding. El rheumatic Now What? So I go to my new rheumy today. Guest guest Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Hi Dolores Sorry, plaquenil is not an antifinlammatory drug, it is an antimalarial drug that happens to also help certain autoimmune disorders. Minocin may have *some* antiinflammatory properties but it does not come close to ibuprofen, it's primary action is as an antibiotic. It's very good that you are finding relief from minocin, but I don't know if it's such a good idea telling folks to unilaterally ignore their doctor's advice. I was on minocin for a few years for another problem, and my arthritis symptoms did not get better and in fact progressed - as with most medicines that work for some and not always for others. I believe antibiotics have a major role to play in our disorders, but for some patients I also believe there is a role for other approaches. Best wishes - > > Hi, Plaquenil is an antiinflammatory, but so is Minocin. I already had sclerosed lungs when I was diagnosed with S/D & R/A and I also have developed pulmonary hypertension. Why take two antiinflammatories when One will do? Ditch the plaquenil. I did and take no pain pills at all b/cause I have no pain. Simple! Dolores Quote

Guest guest Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Cooky, I agree w/. There are times when more than one approach is warranted. There are patients for whom the antibiotic protocol alone is not enough. There are a lot of patients on biologics such as Enbrel, etc. who start taking the AP while on these drugs & are lucky enough to eventually wean off of them, but that's not true for all of them. There are plenty of people that take Placquenil in addition to the AP. For someone newly diagnosed w/a Rheumatic disorder, I feel it's extremely important to get that person under control as fast as possible to avoid long term damage & then that person may attempt to wean off of the stronger DMARDs, if able. Placquenil is a pretty safe drug w/good therapeutic potential. I agree with that it's not an anti inflammatory. Guest guest Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Hi Talia, I didn't stop the Minocin. Dr. Franco prescribed Zithromax in conjunction with the Minocin. I took Minocin on M, W, and F..........and the Zithromax on Tuesdays and Saturdays. I know what you mean about the Minocin seeming like it lost it's effect -- it's still working, even though we don't notice big jumps in improvement. When Dr. Franco added the Zithromax, I again noticed first a Herxheimer reaction (see the FAQ at www.rheumatic.org) and then the Zithromax improved areas that had not responded to the Minocin. It was as if Minocin " fixed " the muscle weakness, pain, and eventually the fatigue.......and the Zithromax " fixed " (or greatly reduced) my cough (which had accompanied my rheumatic disease, and was a real pain in the you know what!) and other symptoms. I think Dr. Franco's theory is that we can have more than one variety of " bugs " in our system, and the different antibiotics are specific for some and not others. Therefore, the combo approach is often quite effective. Also........in combination, antibiotics often are greater than either one individually. That's probably why your doc wants to continue the Minocin. No matter what -- you need to take a good quality acidophilus/bifidus product. Get a refrigerated brand from your health food store, and look for organisms in the billions, if available. I take 4 capsules every night, at bedtime. Eventually the Zithromax started causing episodes of diarrhea (on Z-days). Dr. Franco took me off of it, and six months later I noticed my cough increasing, so he added Biaxin to the Minocin. Biaxin on M, Tu, W, Th, and F, and Minocin on M,W,F. Years later I happened to mention it to Dr. Lallande and he suggested that I might have been able to stay on the Zithromax and treat the diarrhea by taking acidophilus/bifidus twice a day, instead of just at night. It gets tricky -- timing everything! I take the Minocin and Biaxin in the same swallow, but the acidophilus/bifidus needs to be taken at least two or four hours away from the abx. The good thing is that now, after 10 years, I don't have to watch the schedule so tightly -- whew! Hope this helps! It sounds like your doctor is a peach! He will see YOU get better and learn more about the AP (incidentally, AP isn't a medically recognized term -- the members of this group coined the word for simplicity's sake :-) Take care, ~Connie Re: rheumatic Re: Now What? > Hi Connie, > When you mentioned that Dr. Franco prescribed Zithromax twice a week > and non -Minocin days do you mean you stopped Minocin for awhile? Guest guest Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I'm not trying to be snotty here but this is what this web site is for...antibiotics for auto immune etc. A few months ago this web site was dying. Exchanging emails prompted us to start speaking up like we did years ago to encourage people to take a chance on Ap. I will take anyone down a peg who tries to put down anyone for their opinions or encouragement. Plaquenil may not be a specific anti inflamatory but it may help during the time it takes the AP to start working. cooky rheumatic Re: Now What? Guest guest Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Just wanted to say that I opened this email at random from the many that are in my inbox. I've been on a clinical trial for the last 6 months and I have been through the worst hell of my life. I've lost my job, my husband, my home my whole life is in tatters and I'm in pain and I'm frightened and I've got a little toddler to look after. I've worked so hard at trying to get rid of this the last year and right now, the tears are streaming down my face because I am so devistated that this has got worse again. I don't know, and I don't even care anymore why everyone is fighting, it's all that seems to happen on sites that I try and look at I am just so sad, really so sad that it hurts right in the pit of my heart that people can't just stop. Please, I don't know who or what any fights are about but please stop. This is life, this is our life, is it really important -why don't we all try and get rid of this thing. Please anyone who reads this. Please just stop. >From: " Cooky " <cookee1@...> >Reply-rheumatic ><rheumatic > >Subject: RE: rheumatic Re: Now What? >Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2006 10:58:35 -0400 > >Maybe you did and you have the same problem I do.
