Vicky, I can only offer my experience of terrible diarrhea with my

son when he eats dairy. Perhaps you can do without the goat yogurt

for a week or two. I think you can use the probiotics without

yogurt. My son eats meat (burgers), few vegetables and few fruits.

He has just graduated to eggs. I've tried nuts a couple times and he

is quite unready for those. He is also salicylate sensitive which

eliminates more possibilities. However, he is getting his vitamins

and his gut is healing. I can tell in so many areas. For me, this

really restricted diet is temporary and necessary for healing. Can

your son take the turkey soup?

He's been on the SCD for over a year. In that time, we have NOT

been able to add new foods, he still doesn't tolerate them. I know

he's not getting enough vitamins/minerals and ever since I tried to

add more yeast treatment we've had a lot more diarrhea. However, I

have been wondering lately if maybe he doesn't have a blockage

(constipation) or encopresis is what I think it is also called and

what I see in his stools is just what is leaking past. The reason

I'm curious is that with some probiotic treatment I was told to add

fiber but I never saw changes in his BM's, just continued diarrhea

and blood in his stool.

Hi Vicki,

It is nice to hear from you again. I remember that your son was a

patient of Dr Krigsman and that you sent us photos that showed your

son's improvement with SCD. I remember that your son's diet was

limited but that you saw a lot of progress with GI symptoms.

I am so sad to hear that things have changed. What do you think

happened to mess this? The yeast treatments?

Some suggestions:

*blend his veggies to make them easier to digest

*enzymes

*continue the yogurt if it does not worsen the symptoms

*five smaller meals instead of three big meals

*get help from a SCD counselor

We have a problem report on our website. Please fill that and we will

try to help you.

Vickie,

What starter are you using? I've never had yogurt turn out like that...... are

you taking it right out of the maker and then chilling it well before stirring

or checking it? Maybe you could try making some of the nut yogurt if you're

thinking he might not be tolerating the dairy.

What do you mean by being agressive with the yeast treatment? What antifungals

have you used? I think you've really got to get the good bacteria down there to

take up the space where the old bad guys were camped out. I do also remember

someone once telling me that when colonies of well-entrenched yeast and bacteria

die-off, the places where they were connected to the intestinal wall are bound

to be really tender and raw...... so it might make sense to go back to a very

simple menu..... of all cooked, maybe even strained or pureed veggies (strain

out pea or lentil skins, etc) to just make all of his food as easy to digest as

possible...... while you're making sure to get the live acidophilus down there

to stake their claims and get settled in.

PS...... are you using iodized sea salt? I know it's available.... I bought

Hain's iodized sea salt. I was just wondering because I remember Elaine saying

how very important this is for our kids who are not getting any canned foods

anymore (plenty of iodized salt is always added to canned and packaged foods).

Iodine is something that is really hard to get in our diets and is essential to

thyroid function.

Questions!

I have not been on this site for a while. I have been putting my

energy towards finding a job to replace that which I lost. But now

I'm having lots of problems with my son.

1. He is still SCD compliant, however, he is having diarrhea and

some blood in his stools and sore bottom issues. Could this be a

sulfur issue? If I eliminate eggs, what do I give him for

breakfast? He currently eats eggs and either ground turkey or ground

pork (he doesn't tolerate ANY sausage or beef) for breakfast.

I had been playing around with his diet, trying to be more aggressive

with the yeast issue but I seem to have made things worse. I'm not

sure what to do now. He cannot go on like this.

He eats turkey, chicken and pork, eggs

vegetables are broccoli, green beans and peas, he doesn't seem to be

digesting these at this time

He doesn't seem to tolerate ANY fruits or juice at this time.

Homemade goat yogurt when I can get it made properly, it hasn't been

working out too well lately. I can usually make 1 quart at a time

successfully, but when I make 2 quarts, even though I follow the same

protocol and mix it real well, it just doesn't come out right. The

last time the top half was like water and the bottom half was like

sludge.

The only seasoning is sea salt.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Thank you

My yogurt maker's instructions say that the solid will be all at the bottom if

you don't mix the starter with a small amt of milk before you add to the whole

batch. I've never tried more than one quart at a time, though.

But, you know, my yogurt seems a little like this until I refrigerate and drip

it - more liquid at the top and more solid at the bottom. Once I refrigerate

and drip it, it's perfect.

If eggs are a problem, and you think it might be the sulpher, molybednum could

help. I give it to my son because he never tolerated eggs and I've 'heard' that

IBD sufferers are commonly deficient in this trace mineral. Too much can cause

copper deficiency, but I think you'd have to get a lot of it to cause that. I

give 500 mcg a day in chelated form. Water OZ makes some, too, which might

be even better.

And you know, my younger son, when he has dieoff, has horrible stools for

several days - raw bottom, yellow or chunky stools, all the symptoms of what

might be an actual yeast infection. But then it tapers off (without any diet

changes at all) and he gets a lot better - solid stools, no diaper rash, no

yellow or chunky stools... so maybe you are actually seeing a major dieoff

reaction?
