Hi ,

You are right, an immune suppressant is anything which lowers the body's

natural defenses. Some drugs have been developed specifically for this

purpose in order to prevent rejection of surgical transplants, e.g.

Cyclosporine. Other commonly used drugs such as Cortisone (and all steroids)

have immune suppressant side-effects so should not be used long-term.

Marijuana is a proven immune suppressant.

Environmental factors also affect the immune system. UV radiation is an

immune suppressant, and may contribute to the tendency of sun exposure to

cause skin cancers, according to the WHO. Deficiencies of essential

nutrients like zinc can also compromise the immune system.

Yes, and conversely, an excess of zinc--say, by

oversupplementation--can also depress the immune

system. With zinc, you must definitely stay within a

certain window.

Interesting about marijuana, by the way. If it

depresses the immune system, I wonder why so many

people advocate it for medicinal purposes (aside from

its painkilling and anti-inflammatory properties)?

Actually that is one way that the immunosuppression was documented; used as

a hunger stimulant for HIV and Chemo patients, marijuana was quite effective

in clinical trials. Unfortunately, it also caused (further) degradation in

the patients' immune systems. Here is a link on some trials with HIV

patients in Europe:

That document doesn't speculate on the cause, but I've read that marijuana

suppresses antibody production, FWIW.

I also ready recently that the zinc to copper ratio is important.
