Guest guest
My whole system is so messed up, I'm not even sure what to do next. Am hypo due to RAI for Graves 8 years ago. 4 years ago, I added cytomel to the synthroid and immediately noticed the difference and felt better for a few months. Dr. adjusted dosage based on TSH and dropped me to .112 synthroid + 10 cytomel. Continued to have problems so switched to 1.5 of armour -- within a month, all symptoms were resolved. But of course it wouldn't last. Upped to 2.25 grains and felt great for 2 months, then had lots of problems. Tests showed low FT4 and high FT3. Went with the advice of some others and tried to get both #s more in balance. Since I was having horrible hair loss (which I'd previously only had with low FT4) and heart palps (assuming due to the high FT3), we thought this was the right direction. It has been a nightmare over the past two years of these adjustments. Numbers finally got good, but I still felt like crap. Tested adrenals and they were messed up, so have been taking nutri-meds on my own for about a month, altho I don't know if at the right amt. Also taking iron for low ferritin. I am so depressed, still having hair loss, still no sex drive, still no ability to really feel any joy or happiness, still no feeling in my muscles, plus heart palps. I want to go back to all armour, but am scared because that is when so many of the problems really kicked in. I'm supposed to go back for more blood tests soon (am currently on .137 T4 + 1 grain armour), but don't see the point. Already have wasted so much money on these tests that we make adjustments based on -- and feel no better. Plus if I don't feel better this time, my dr wants to refer me on to an endo because of my suppressed TSH which I certainly don't want to do. I counted up and I should have 194 1 grain tablets available until my prescription runs out. Also have 36 1 1/2 grains from April of 03, but wonder if they would still be as potent. How should I go about this if I take the plunge? (None of my other self-treating decisions have worked out so I don't have a lot of confidence!) Should I up to 2 grains and up from there? I'm pretty lost and so tired of living this way. I'm sorry it's so long -- it seems I try to put my whole life history in one little post. Thanks for any input - Debbie
Guest guest
If it were me, I'd try to get the adrenals and the ferritin tested to see if the dose is correct for your situation and the symptoms. You mention that you were on 2.25 grains of armour? Have you been on this low dose these 2 yrs that you mention? Armour does tend to bring on the other things if they're out of whack, from everything I've read, so that would be the two things I'd concentrate on first. JMO. Guest guest
Janie - My ferritin in August was 31 (10-291). I've been taking 2 ferrous sulfate (325 mg each) per day since August 18. Tried 3/day for a little bit, but constipation started. In January, my ferritin was 52. That was the first time I'd ever checked it. Since my good 2 months on armour was 2 years ago, it's hard telling what my ferritin was then. Could it fluctuate a lot? I don't know what would have caused the drop from Jan to August. Adrenals were checked in April by saliva: > > Debbie, can you give us more info?? How low was your Ferritin? How > long have you been on iron and how much are you taking daily? You > definitely have symptoms of low Ferritin....depression, hair loss, > palps, etc. > > And the adrenals---what kind of test did you do, and can you post > the results with ranges? How much of the adrenal nutri-meds are you > on? > > If you felt great on 2 1/4 grains Armour, then fell back after two > months, it could have been the low Ferritin. > > Janie >
Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Just wanted to suggest a different brand iron to you, I use 'Gentle Iron' by Solgar (which is iron bisglycinate) or the same thing by Vega is meant to be good. Iron Bisglycinate is non-constipating. I heard that " spa-tone " sachets of iron rich water are good too and can be added to orange juice and is totally absorbable and builds up iron stores rapidly. Here is more info I was told a while ago by someone!! ... " There is some evidence to suggest that Ferritin levels rise of their own accord as your thyroid stabilises, but I guess that will take time. (AS your thyroid function improves your kidneys produce more EPO which tells your body to make more red blood cells.) The one caution is..if you are post menopausal don't overdo it...you can also overload with iron which is just as bad..if not worse. good too (Holland and Barrett) In a hypothyroid state less oxygen is required so less haemoglobin need be produced. There is a further link between anaemia and thyroid disease in that people with autoimmune thyroid disease may also be likely to have other autoimmune disorders including pernicious anaemia, where there are antibodies to cells in the stomach and the substance produced by those cells (anti-parietal cell antibodies and anti-intrinsic factor antibodies) which may cause reduced vitamin B12 absorption. Nowt to do with ferritin, however. I've forwarded your Email to my biochemistry colleague and will let you know of any reply regarding ferritin and thyroid function.
