What herb(s) can we take to help us fight off colds, flus, etc. this winter?

Molly, I don't take anything to 'boost my immune system' except for Armour.

I've been sick once since this all started back in Nov 2001. The time I was

sick, it was a cold, and I was very stressed, and working many hours because we

had a lady at work that was out for surgery.

The only thing I take at this point is Armour Thyroid, and maybe a few

supplements, but not even those on a regular basis. Mostly, it's just Armour

and I used to get 'everything' that was going around. :-)

Since I've been diagnosed in 2001 with Graves disease, which started my hyperT

phase.......I am very funny about what I take to 'boost' anything. I didn't

have RAI, so there is always a chance, that the hyperT/Graves will come back. I

have heard if you have autoimmune thyroid disease, stimulants even for the

immune system can backfire. Echanacia (sp) is one of the offenders. It's

supposed to 'build up the immune' system and I'd never take it because I have

TSI antibodies (for Graves Disease). Tried it once, not long before the

hyperT/Graves kicked in. Don't know if there is a connection, but since I'm

prone to have this come back, I wouldn't take it anymore. I also don't take flu

shots anymore because of the Graves disease.

If I feel like I'm getting sick, I take Vit C constantly (lozenges work really

well) and it's been quite some time with no sinus infections, (maybe a little

sinus drainage) but no colds or flu. :-)

I'm looking for something to boost my immune system also. Any ideas?

Thanks,

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought echinacea and have used it in the past, but then I read we should

not use it if we have Hashi's. Our immune system is already too strong if

we're producing antibodies. Is that right? Just another facet of this

whole issue that confuses me............

I'm using all that stuff plus tons of other nutritional supplements in liquid,

powder, capsule, tablet & granular forms several times a day. I'm sure they've

saved my life & health much more than I realize so far. I take zinc & selenium

everytime I take my generic Armour for better absorption.

I'm also taking " Thyroid Essentials " for about a week now with a number of

natural things in it, including all the B vitamins & a new thing I just heard

about called " Coleus Forskohlii " or " forskolin " . It's been around for healing &

repairing human beings for centuries & is popular in Hindu & Ayurvedic

traditional medicine. It's used exensively for cardiovascular disease, abdominal

colic, respiratory disorders, painful unination, insomnia & convulsions among

other things.

It's a cell-regulator/stimulator that increases thyroid function, relaxes

arteries & smooth muscles like the chest bronchials, strengthens the heart,

promotes weight-loss, relieves digestive/malabsorption disorders, prevents

cancer, relieves hypothroidism by enhancing thyroid function, treats glaucoma,

is a great immune system enhancer & has no side effects. You can read more about

it at http://www.syntrax.com/Articles/forskolin.htm.

Also the Swanson vitamin catalog (www.swansonvitamins.com) has wonderfully low

prices & great products under their own Swanson product labels plus all the

brand name stuff too for huge savings on nutrititional supplements of all kinds.

That's where I got the " Thyroid Essentials " with the " Coleus Forskohlii " in it

in fact. I buy 90% of my nutritional products from them now. They deliver very

fast too. They're saving me a $bundle$.
