Guest guest
Could someone tell me how to time the giving of the acidophilus powder when we are also taking Kirkman Enzymes? My son swallows the enzyme capsules, so we give them 30 minutes before he eats, since I read that the capsule needs that amount of time to break down in the stomach. I also read that the acidophilus powder should be given 30 minutes before eating. But then I read that you should not give these at the same time because the enzymes will digest the probiotic and it won't do any good. So what is the best way to time these? Thanks, , mom to , age 8, ASD, SCD with intro 10 weeks

Guest guest
Yes, that would work. Is one dose daily ok? I had the idea it was to be divided in two. > > How about a bedtime then? > > > Jody > mom to -5 and -7 > SCD 17 months
Guest guest
, Perhaps in a perfect world, two divided doses would be better. I don't know. I never could get the divided doses because of the timing. Sometimes we have to do what we can when we can. We use enzymes as well and I know that working out the timing of everything can be very tricky. I'd just give one dose at bedtime. It has to be better than no doses at all. I had the idea it was to be divided in two. , I was one of the people looking into this 'recommendation' of probiotics separate from enzymes. It doesn't have to be that rigid. Enzymes are taken at the beginning of the meal because they work on contact and this allows the most time for them to be working. However, some probiotics may have an interaction with proteases. Not all probiotics, just some. I did several extensive literature searches to see which strains were suspectible. It is not clear cut so the conservative guideline is to give them separately and that way you don't have to worry about it. If you give them together and feel it is working fine, that is great. It really depends on the probiotic product (which strains, how it is manufactured, etc). You can call the maker of the probiotic and ask them if their probiotics should be given away from enzymes or not. Culturelle (not on SCD I think but a good example) does not have to be separated from enzymes. At least some varieties of acidophilus don't have to be away from enzymes either. Separeting them can be as simple as giving enzymes at the beginning of the meal and probiotics at the end. I gave probiotics at bedtime because it was easier for me and my boys took something else at that time anyway. We used a once-a-day probiotic product as well so divided doses didn't come up. Giving probiotics at the end of a meal is fine, at bedtime, if you give supps mid-morning or mid-afternoon, etc. Some probiotics are required to be away from meals, so check with the manufacture on their probiotic. Sorry this is so long, but I try to explain why the guideline is so you can taylor it to your own situation. .
