Guest guest
Hi, We had this problem in the beginning the first time we did SCD and she lost about 3-4 lbs. Make sure to give him lots of fats. Avocado if he can tolerate, nut butters if he can tolerate, nut brownies, nut butter pancakes. He is eating a lot of low cal. foods. Sometimes I give a couple of tlb. of cashew butter and it's 190 calories. The foods are very digestible and they need to eat lots of snacks in between because of this. Try giving him something every couple of hours. I make a " ice cream " ( that is what I call it) with frozen mango, an avocado and some carrot juice. It comes out frozen like ice cream. (Just put it all in a blender) My child does not like to eat plain veggies so I make a meat loaf with 2 kinds of ground meat, garlic, onion, tomato juice, egg, nut flour, pureed veggie. She will eat two huge pieces of it. Add up his calories and make sure he is getting enough for his age. I think Jody recommends www.fitday.com . Guest guest
Laurel, You don't need to wait 3 months before introducing the nut yogurt or nut butters unless your child just can't tolerate them until then. If stools are improving, I think most people have been able to add the nut butters and nut yogurt within a few weeks of starting SCD. If you can't add the nut products, then please add avocados, which are very high in fat and calories. Is your son getting enough calories? If you need help figuring that out, you can e-mail me privately. We usually recommend waiting 3 months to introduce goat or cow yogurt if the child has had previous bad reactions to dairy products. Guest guest
I think that for kids that have been CF, we do usually say to wait that long before introducing yogurt. But, since you said he already tolerates cheese, I thought maybe that wait wouldn't be necessary. Actually, the sooner you can add the good bacteria, the better. At any rate, I mentioned it because you said you were thinking of adding cheese. I wasn't aware of a 3 month wait time for nut butters. I see it listed as a " stage 2 " food.... but there is no time-line that is hard and fast for nut butter (or for any food on the stages chart)... not that I'm aware of anyway. Unless he was sensitive to nuts prior, I would think they'd be a good thing to add soon, if you're wanting to get some calories into him. That seems like a lot of weight to lose in only 2 weeks..... so I guess I'd be inclined to go ahead with small amounts. Patti, mom to Katera, SCD 14 months Re: Help! Son Losing Weight Thanks for your reply. I thought we were supposed to wait at least 3 months before introducing the yogurt and nut butters/flour. Is that wrong? Thanks! Coconut oil/butter is a good substitute for butter if not. Olive oil (extra virgin). What about nut butters? If he can tolerate cheese, he'd no doubt be able to tolerate our SCD lactose-free yogurt. I'd be trying to puree some of those cooked veggies and just mix them into ground meat for meatloaf or some of the other " sneaky " recipes from pecanbread.com .
