As I recall the gals were happy with their surgery, I think that many

people probably are less likely to answer the farther they are away from the

time of their surgery. I hope they get back to you. I remember both were

good fun so maybe patience is needed :) My sister checks her e-mail once a

week I have to WAIT a long time for her responses :) PAige

Anne...I spoke to 2 postops in AK and they were very nice. They wereMarilyn

sen in Wasilla and Kathy Thorstad in Fairbanks. #s are on the list

in the back of the Patient Manual. I triedThere was also a Tina Ketterman

in Eagle River who " no longer is at this #, (klunk) I found it better

(although more pricey) to phone people or email and have them call me and

then call them right back; that way they could choose a time # their

convenience. Sincerely, Martha in VT

We can all hope that their lives are so full that they don't have time for

any of that now. Did they have phone numbers? A courtesy call might be

more effective. If they hang up on you, well........call back and say

quickly, 'I take it you are you unsatisfied?' LOL! I would bet that it's

the first case though. Alot of people's stories that I read on the net,

after they lose weight, they are immersing themselves in life.

I am sorry Steve but, I must disagree.. I have had a few people tell me that

they will talk to me on the phone but refuse to give me any information in

email.. Oh well.. There are plenty of people who would be more than happy to

give me their story in email.. Why don't I call them? Because the call would

be long distance for me.. Yes.. I am VERY devoted.. As devoted as you can

possibly get.. but, we have a long distance block on our phone and if I

wanted to call someone it would have to be from a pay phone.. I am sorry..

We simply cannot afford the charges.. It's either long distance or food on

our table.. I prefer the latter.. And it's not fair for me to ask someone

that I don't even know to accept a collect call from me... I have given my

phone number so that they could call me but so far no one has. I won't press

the issue for the same reason.. Please don't say that it " also has the

effect of weeding out the less sincere ones " ..

In my thoughts and prayers,

Terri

I'd say that they just didn't want to be bothered. As a postop, I can

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. If someone wants something from

me, they're the ones that are going to have to put the effort into it, not

me. Either they send a list of specific questions or call, or I ignore

them. I really don't think it's fair for a perfect stranger to expect me to

write a free-form essay for them (for the record, when I was a preop I

pulled this myself a couple of times, but think better of it now). I have

no problems with answering any questions that anybody wants to ask, but it's

gonna be at MY convenience, not THEIRS.

Hi ..

Nahh.. I wouldn't go that far.. I've only emailed about 45 or so and only

need 2 more to finish it up.. I can understand that he would like specific

questions and preferrably over the phone but, I was also trying to give him

another side of it to look at.. I mean, it literally comes down to paying a

phone bill so that I can talk to post ops or food on the table.. We are on a

super tight budget... He is more than welcome to have his own opinion.. :)

If some post ops don't want to respond to us pre ops, then so be it.. I have

found that a lot of people have just typed up their story in general and

then added if you had any questions after reading it, then they would

answer.. it's a little less personal but, very understandable... But, to

each his or her own.. If someone don't answer me, I don't take it to heart..

:)

In my thoughts and prayers,

Terri

I'm not much into the flame mail but I will say this when looking for

contacts through email I wrote out a list of questions for each person and

the last question was always " 11) is there anything I should be asking that

I haven't covered? " . This seemed to work out real well and I received back

all but one response. I'd like to thank the people that answered my

questions it's helped put my mind at ease. Btw. I talked to Steve on the

phone for about a half hour and I can't thank him enough for the answers and

info he provided. In my humble opinion it's a matter of me doing whatever it

takes to reach this goal. Just like those that came before me...

Mark

" With tribulation comes perseverance

Perseverance begets character

And with character comes hope.... "

Hmm I'm pretty sure that's somewhere in the bible but I could be wrong...

alas it's been a while...

That's pretty much what I thought, too. I emailed them both twice, about a

month apart. I just wanted to talk to someone that had to make this super long

flight home about how that was after the surgery, but I guess I can " wing " it!

And no, I haven't seen any listings with phone numbers. I have what is

supposed to be the new version of the patient manual that I downloaded but

there are no phone numbers on mine. Where are they?

Martha, Kathy T. is one I emailed that hasn't responded. T. Ketterman's email

didn't bounce back, so I just assumed she was too busy, also, more or less.

The one in Wasilla I didn't see at all. Where are these numbers? I haven't

seen any.

Hi Margie. I had the mini bypass gastric surgery on 25 Mar 99 and to date

have lost 152 pounds. My starting weight was 350 pounds. You learn quickly

that the weight comes off so try not to get too attached to your scales.

Some weeks I lose more than others so to keep from getting frustrated I only

weigh once in a while. I was extremely lucky in that I had no

complications. The hardest part about surgery was the I-Vs. They

infiltrated and went under my skin instead of into my veins. Didn't really

hurt but was really uncomfortable. Dr. R. is doing away with a lot of the

meds that have to go in through an IV and giving them in liquid form

instead. That will help alot I'm sure. I was in the hospital for 2 days.

The one thing I do suggest for surgery is do not be afraid to use the

morphine pump. I think now a days though he prescribes Demerol. It is

there for your use. I didn't use it that much except for the first few

hours after surgery. It felt like a MACK truck was sitting on my chest and

it was hard to take a deep breath but after a couple of shots of morphine,

it became easier and easier. Since I live in Fayetteville, which is only a

couple of hours away, Dr. R. let me come home instead of staying in Durham.

The first couple of months I stayed strictly with liquids, yogurt, popsicles

and soupy mashed potatoes. It really helps in the long run to stay with

liquids as long as possible so your new stomach can heal. It was hard

because I really, really wanted food but found out you don't really need it.

Today, I can eat almost anything in very small quantities. I nibble almost

all day long to keep from getting too hungry therefore eating too fast and

too much. I've found I can't eat certain types of Chinese food cuz it gives

me the dumping. I didn't drive until about a week/week and a 1/2 after

surgery. I stayed out of work for two weeks. I could have gone back to

work after one week, but since I had the time I took an extra week to pamper

myself. If asked if I would have this surgery again, I say a resounding

YES. I feel better. My diabetes and high blood pressure are gone. I have

more energy and have so much fun shopping for new clothes. I have gone from

a size 32 or larger from s and Lane s to a size 16 at Sears,

Belks, and a whole lot of other stores. I haven't had so much fun shopping

for clothes in years. My daughter is getting used to the new me. She's 22

and all her life she's had an obese mother. She's never had a slim one.

I took off from work for two weeks but probably could have gone back after

one but decided since I had the time, to pamper myself and give my body more

time to adjust. To date, I have had no major problems and very few minor

problems.

Before this surgery, I tried every diet and drug available for weight loss.

On phen-fen I lost 80 pounds but gained 120 back when taken off of them.

Nothing worked until this surgery. I don't take any over the counter drugs

unless prescribed by Dr. R. I take benadryl for colds; liquid children's

motrim for headaches and body aches; TUMS for extra calcium and heartburn

(which I seldom have). He doesn't like for you to take very much medicine

afterwards. Some can cause acid on your stomach which in turn can cause an

ulcer.

Dr. Rutledge and his staff are the best. I've never met a more friendlier,

loving, caring and talented Doctor. He has been working with the obese for

over 20 years. He truly understands how we feel and where we're coming

from. He is a 120 pound, whirring diverish. The man is constantly on the

go and always there for his patients, anytime night or day. I've never met

such a person in my life. I have the highest esteem, regard and love for

him as do all his patients.

Would I do again it? YES! YES! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My insurance approved me without any problems. Some are having a really

tough time with their insurance. Some are fighting with appeals, changing

insurance and some are even self-paying. Hopefully, with all of us working

together, we can one day change the insurfance policies.

If you need any further help, please just ask away. Feel free to call me

anytime. My number is .

Hello, Steve did you know what questions to ask before surgery?

That is why they are called PRE OP. Most of us didn't know what

questions to ask prior to surgery. If they knew ALL the questions

they needed to ask, I sure they would be smart enough to find the

answers. If it a burden to you always have the option of saying no.

By the way, for a group that spent a week on tooting, I fail to see

the insult

But Christy--our immune systems are already so boosted that they are attacking our bodies as if the body was a foreign object. That's why they treat autoimmune stuff by depressing our immune system with pred and the like.

That's why we should generally avoid things like echinechia (which I probably spelled wrong)

Found this at http://www.ashastd.org/hpvccrc/gw.html#reduce Great website about HPV.

If this cream is used to boost the immune system to fight off HPV and has been proven to work, why hasn't a form of this been incorporated into use with autoimmune diseases?

Imiquimod cream (Aldara®). This is also a self-applied treatment for external genital warts. It is safe, effective and easy to use. This cream is different than any other treatments. Other treatments work by destroying the wart tissue, but Aldara actually boosts the immune system to fight HPV.

I'm such a dumbass. I was thinking backwards about the meds that decrease our immune systems. It might be something they could research though. If it increases the immune system, maybe they could find how to decrease it from that stuff. OK if anyone followed that, you might as well follow me the rest of the way.... we both need a nap LOL See ya after nap time!
