hot dog question

Kenzie has a hot dog, Kosher Ball Park s, that he always loved. I still

had two packages in the freezer from last summer. Yesterday I was basically out

of everything for him but some apples and pork rinds. I live 100 miles from

shopping. He wouldn't eat chicken. He must be so over it. Anyhow, I broke

down and let him have hot dogs. I feel really guilty. He of course loved them.

The two evils in them are corn syrup and natural flavorings. They have 1 gram

of sugar per hot dog. I gave him enzymes before he had them. My question is,

how bad is that natural flavoring? I know the corn syrup is the sugar. I don't

expect you all to say it's ok that he ate them. His behavior didn't change and

his stool didn't change. Carol and Shelia, I know you've said just a little

infraction can make a difference with you. Kenzie is just not eating much any

more. I'm not saying I'd ever go back to the old way of eating but I am

seriously considering a somewhat modified version. Anyhow, if there's only one

gram of sugar, what is that natural flavoring doing to him?

Thanks

Penny

Penny, with all the problems you have had with Kenzie you really have to be

strict. When faced with an illegal food versus no food you had to do what you

thought was best under the circumstances. Too bad you couldn't borrow something

from a neighbor but what's done is done and why put yourself through a guilt

trip?

Do a good shopping and just get back on track. We are all with you!

Penny,

If you are going to feed him store bought hot dogs, I would get

the Applegate Farms hot dogs. They do not have corn syrup in

them.

The corn syrup will do more damage than the natural flavorings I

think.

I know that you already feel guilty and this is not to add to the

guilt. But just remember that every time you give in when he

refuses to eat what you serve, you are reinforcing the refusal. He

is able to manipulate and control his environment by refusing. It

is the easiest form of control. But when you give in, you are

giving him control of a situation that he does not need to be in

control of. Food choices for him should consist of only the

choices you approve.

I know that you have had enormous obstacles in following SCD

with Kenzie. None of us would think less of you for quitting.

Everyone has to make choices based on individual

circumstances. I think you had seen really nice gains in food

choice expansion back a couple of months ago. I am not sure

what might have caused him to regress back into refusing to eat.

Other than perhaps when he had illegal foods a few times and

really enjoyed them. The longer someone has been away from

something the easier it is to avoid it, but having even a little can

make it hard to stop for some people. Eating the starches is like

an addiction for these kids -and for us as adults too I think.

Otherwise, we would all have the self-control to just jump right

on SCD with our kids.

Penny,

Manufacturers can get away with adding all kinds of things under the label of

" natural flavorings " , including sugars and starches.... and MSG, etc. You just

never know. I don't think any of us can really answer the question " what is it

doing to him? " ... we can't know what it might do in the long run. Corn syrup

can't be a good thing. You've struggled so much... but I just fear that adding

this in on a daily ongoing basis would end up being a bad thing.

At the very least, if you feel you must use hot dogs, I would agree with the

others who suggested the Applegate Farms hot dogs. I personally don't use them

anymore at all.... but if I HAD to pick a hot dog, that would be the one.

Shelton's used to be OK but now contain potato starch.
