I've felt for the past few months leading up to the election (non-election, or whatever) that it was a sad commentary on the intelligence of our voting population that so many would embrace Bush's "message." He routinely said whatever he thought (WAIT.... he doesn't think on his own.... whatever his handlers thought) would get votes. For example, the ranting about the "DEATH TAX..." I brought this up with several people, and almost all of them were in favor of the Federal Government doing away with inheritance taxes. The people that I talked to were certainly NOT going to inherit millions of dollars - they had no idea that less than 2% of the population is ever subject to Federal inheritance taxes - the wealthiest 2%. Once they understood who actually pays this tax, they all preferred that the tax stay in effect. Collecting from them, means less tax dollars need to be collected from the average person. Just one example... Analyzing plans for health coverage, prescripion drugs, schools (public vs. vouchers for private) and tax cuts in general would yield similar results. Unfortunately, we have a generally uninformed, often ignorant electorate who will fall for the same old tired lines.... "read my lips - no new taxes!!"
