Guest guest
I didn't go out to the van to see them off, being sickly and all. I watched through the door as got settled in the front seat beside his aunt, and then carry on some animated discussion with his aunt, grandfather, and father. As I stood there watching, it suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks -- I was watching a boy FULLY PRESENT in his situation. He was talking, and REACTING to everything. (they were having a debate about whether or not could wear his grandfather's driving glasses. The answer was no.) He was THERE. He was SO THERE. Not like other years, where they'd strap him in and he'd be staring at his shoes chanting. He was fully cognizant of where he was, who he was with, and where he was going. I was overwhelmed.
