Guest guest
Have you read Elaine's book or the SCD Science section on pecanbread.com? If not, please do. The SCD will address the issues of yeast overgrowth and bacterial overgrowth (except clostridia). Guest guest
Hi brake, This is from a previous post: We do occasionally see yeast flare ups when starting SCD. This should be a temporary increase. As lots of pathogenic bacteria are the first to die off by not feeding them with starches and sugars, yeast will attempt to take up that empty space initially. By giving either powerful homemade SCD yogurt or excellent probiotics, one can *usually* avoid this situation. For those with yeast overgrowth, " It is wise to cut back on honey ingestion at the beginning of the dietary regimen (amount of honey in recipes should be decreased by at least 75%). The amount of honey may be increased as the condition improves. " (taken from BTVC) We have found that using some form of probiotic is also helpful. Probiotics can take the form of yogurt (made from goat, cow or nut milk), other fermented foods (such as HOMEMADE sauerkraut or kimchi) or probiotic powder or capsules (in case the child is not yet ready for any yogurts). Ensuring that all vegetables and fruits foods are peeled and cooked at the beginning is also helpful in controlling yeast overgrowth. Undigested foods can feed microbes and delay healing. Guest guest
So, pre-SCD, my son had an OAT test which said that he had a clostridia overgrowth, possibly c.difficile. The doctor wrote on the sheet that 20 billion cells of lactobacillus (Culturelle) a day would get this under control. But, I never did this. What you are saying is that wouldn't work, only medication would get rid of this? Should I consider doing this now, then, after being on SCD for almost 5 months? Is it likely he still has the clostridia causing problems? Are flagyl and vancomycin antibiotics? What about colloidal silver? Would that work on clostridia as well? I would rather give that if possible. It seems to work on other things like staph. Tina > " What do we do about clostridia overgrowth? " > > Clostridia has to be treated medically. Guest guest
Tina, Clostridia really does need to be treated with prescription meds...... probiotics and/or SCD won't take care of it. If he's already tested positive for clostridia, you need to get that treated. I don't think I'd rely on colloidal silver for that..... but you could discuss it with your doctor. Responding to your other post about yogurt, too..... Have you tried the nut yogurt? It sounds like maybe your son is still having difficulty with the dairy? Either that, or the stuffiness, etc. could be die-off related.... but if so, it will be temporary. If it keeps up, he might just not be able to tolerate it yet. The nut yogurts are a good way of getting the acidophilus in, too. Guest guest
Hi Tina, Some do okay with SCD usually including yogurt and/or acidophilus as a probiotic to clear it up. Some have to step up and add GSE etc. to this as well. For those who don't respond with these steps they often move to the bigger guns of flagyl and lastly vancomycin. Which treatment is necessary depends on the individual, how much overgrowth, overall health, other conditions etc.? What are the symptoms that make you think there may be C. diff.? I have read others using colloidal silver but I don't know of it's effectiveness on Clostridia.
