Kate,

She may be preparing for a big growth spurt. Looks like she is not eating many

vegetables, if any. Is this typical? I'd say her diet looks heavily slanted

toward the proteins and not many carbs. When did you start the yogurt?

11 months SCD - HUGE appetite

HI all -

Over the past few weeks, my four and a half year old has been ramping

up to eating extraordinary amounts of food.

Typically she eats 5 scrambled eggs (she's eat more if we gave them

to her) and 1/4 tsp of yogurt with three strawberries for breakfast,

2 muffins for a mid-morning snack, 5-6 legal hot dogs and a pear for

lunch, and two whole chicken thighs and another pear for dinner.

Is it me, or is this a lot of food? Has anyone else experienced this

at the 11 months mark?

Here is what I come up with using Fitday.com.

Calories 1703

Protein 107g

Carbohydrates 74g

Fat 115g

Her calorie intake does not seem to be that high. But her fat and

protein intake is very high compared to her carbohydrate intake.

You did not list any veggies in the list of foods she is eating.

I think that 2-3 eggs for breakfast, 2 hot dogs for lunch and 1-2

chicken thighs (depending on their size), would be more than

enough protein.

Her diet really needs more carbohydrates. From the info I have

found, kids need 135-165g of carbs per day. She's only getting

about half that amount.

And keep in mind it takes lots of fruits, veggies and meat to add

up to enough calories. Foods like cereal, bread, pasta, etc are

loaded with calories. So, it will take more food to equal out to

enough calories when you take away the starches.

It takes 2 full cups of green beans to equal the calories in one

slice of bread. It takes 1 1/2 cups of cooked squash to get the

same number of calories that are in 10 rice crackers. It would

take 8 CUPS of zucchini to get the calories that are in one grab

bag size bag of plain potato chips.

So, just keep some of these things in mind. It will take a lot of

good fruits and veggies to get enough calories. But in the long

run eating fruits and veggies is so much healthier than a bag of

chips.

year when she barely grew at all!

Hi Kate,

Although increases in food consumed is fairly normal (especially for

kids) when starting SCD there doesn't seem to be enough balance of

vegetables in what is eating. SCD is not meant to be a high

protein diet. Even for kids who are fussy eaters we have lots of

great ideas at the recipe site for getting vegetables in - Sneaky

pancakes, meatloaf etc http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html . It's

great that she is eating different kinds of meat, but I think it is

pretty important to work some vegetables in to make it more balanced.
