What is Extended School Year?

--ESY is a service provided to students with a disabilit, that may require

special education and related services beyond the normal school year in

accordance with the IEP. This service must be provided if services are

necessary to ensure the student receives a Free and Appropriate Public

Education. ESY must meet state standards and is not limited to categories

of disability or automatically limited in number of hours or days.

When is Extended School Year provided?

--ESY can be provided during summer months or track breaks. ESY is NOT the

same as summer school. ESY needs to be considered during the annual IEP.

The IEP can be reconvened to discuss ESY. If the IEP team decides that ESY

is needed, the appropriate IEP forms are filled out. A students' ESY should

provide instruction and/or related services (speech, OT, transportation,

etc.) necessary to address goals/benchmarks.

How do I know if my child needs an Extended School Year?

--If your child experiences a loss of knowledge or skills (regression)

during school breaks and is unable to regain the information or skills

(recoupment) in a reasonable time after returning to school he or she may

need ESY. In addition to regression/recoupment the IEP team also considers

other factors:

the type and severity of the student's disability

the student's degree of self-sufficiency

the ability of parents to provide educational structure at home

the availability of alternative resources

the student's rate of progress towards their annual goals

the student's behavioral and physical difficulties

areas of the student's curriculum that need continuous attention

the student's vocational needs.

I would think that you would be able to make your argument based on the

above factors...
