A good place to start would be the FAQs of this list. Quick version:

chelation (kee-lay-shun) comes fromt he g for claw. The chelation agent acts as

a claw of sorts to grab the offending substance (toxic metals in this case) and

" escort " them out of the body. Please note that there's also chelation for

heart disease, same general principle, different chelators, different substances

being removed.

How might it help your child? If your child has metal toxicity (common among

those with ASD) it can, if done properly, help remove the offending metals.

Individuals on the spectrum often have high levels of mercury (from the

thimerosal in vaccines including Rhogam, from Mom's mercury amalgam dental

fillings, from mother's consumption of fish, living near coal-fired power

plants), arsenic (from stain resistance treatment on infant products, from tap

water, from weather-treated lumber, from pesticides used on golf courses, cotton

fields, & orchards in particular, etc), antimony (from flame-retardant on

bedding and sleepwear, some solder, etc), lead (from lead pipes, lead paint,

soil around roads from use of leaded gasoline years ago, etc.)

Generally, chelation (key-lay-shun) is the process by which toxic metals such

as lead and mercury are removed from the body. The simple definition is to

combine (a compound) with (a metal) so as to form a chelate ring.

Other definitions include:

Chelation - the process of forming a ring by forming one or more hydrogen

bonds. In medicine the process of removing a heavy metal from the bloodstream by

means of a chelate as in treating lead or mercury poisoning.

A chelator is an organic chemical that bonds with and removes free metal ions

from solutions. Chelating agents are sometimes used to treat people suffering

from metal poisoning.

Chelation might benefit your son if he is over-burdened by heavy metal

toxicity. For example, Mercury(Hg) is a severe neurotoxin capable of intense

neuron degeneration in the brain.
