Guest guest
This is my opinion on what was saying yesterday. It may be negative on SCD but we are here for discussion so I am sure there may be lots of opinions. I agree with her on this. SCD has been a " miracle " for some and not for others. Of course any healing and progress our kids have is worth the effort of the diet. After doing SCD twice for 3 months each time at the 2nd month it's a disaster for us. My child has not shown yeast on her last two tests but for some reason between month 2 and 3 she has a severe " die-off " . I wonder if this is the total reason for her behavior, irritability, tiredness, dark circles, and regression? This will be a lot to go through at 3, 6, and 9 months for us. Will we not see the benefits of SCD until two years? There are other parents on the list worrying about their child's weight, loosing weight, and not looking well. I am wondering if this diet is enough of a balance that growing bodies need for energy and weight gain. In the last 6 months instead of gaining a few pounds as in normal development my daughter has lost 4 lbs. She does not look well at this point in the diet. Is there any research on the effect of this type of diet and a growing child? We have also seen both times that she tolerates less types of food while on SCD. I feel like since we are taking out so much and only giving limited food choices (partly due to being dairy free and also low salicylate) that when a food is introduced you see a huge reaction to it. Just like you would an elimination diet. You try things back in after 6 weeks or so and since the food was out of the system for so long you are more likely to see a reaction to it. This has happened to us many times with different foods and the reactions were more likely seen since we are on SCD and it's so limited. Does that make sense? My child ate almond for years and pineapple and white grape only to be very intolerant of those on SCD. This is only my opinion but feel we need to email honestly to open up discussions like this so we can all learn what is best for our children. Guest guest
She is eating the same thing she ate the first two months but was o.k. then. At two months we hit a bad wall and the only explanation for it is " die off " . She does fine for two months then all the sudden all these problems and it doesn't last a few days or a week but weeks! She has been getting a ton of food on SCD. Pecan/pear pancakes with cashew butter for breakfast with pomegranate juice, cashew brownies or jello for snack, chili, meatloaf, hot dogs, beef stew or grilled chicken for lunch and dinner with plenty of fruitsauce, jello and brownies. Homemade mango juice, avocado-carrot-mango ice cream. All her lunch and dinner main dishes contain veggies..............either carrot or green bean or spinach. She's getting lots of eggs in brownies and pancakes. Maybe she just needs more carbs for energy. I don't know. But I do know I can't go through this die-off stuff over and over. Thanks for responding Jody, you are right, when there are so many food restrictions due to allergies, etc. it may not be balanced. If she could handle dairy we'd be a lot better off........................ Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Perhaps she is going through the " three month flare " . Although it doesn't happen as often with these kids it has been reported. In BTVC Elaine mentions it at the end of chapter 9 " ...At about the second or third month., there is sometimes a relapse even when the diet has been carefully followed. This can occur if the person develops a respiratory infection or for no obvious reason. Do not allow this to discourage you! Once the individual gets over this, improvement is usaully steady with minor setbacks occuring occasionally during the first year. " Our recomendation when this happens if it does not clear up on its own is to go back to a more basic diet. This can be the intro diet or a version of the intro diet that fits your needs (non-dairy if needed etc.). Usually after things settle back down the individual can start gradually re-adding foods. The three month flare is very common on the adult lists and we are recognizing more on this list. If you like I can help put together a plan of attack.
