one time in the late 70's, well maybe it was 76 best I recall. A buddy and I

both really dug KFC chicken, so we both went to the closest one by the house and

we each got a 21 piece bucket. I won the eating contest that day by 2 pieces. I

had only 3 left and he had 5 left out of 21 each. a fellow there ask us if we

wanted to take our left over chicken with us, but I was way to full to carry it

and nor did I wish to see any more chicken for a few hours at least!

I use to be exactly 6 foot tall, but now when they measure me it is going

down and getting closer to 5-11. funny how getting older can cause you to get

shorter, but not thinner. maybe it should have been as we age we get taller and

this way we really would get thinner as we shot up toward the sky!

what is really bad about smoking is it makes you wish to eat if you can't

smoke. I bet if I would have ever had the smoking habit as bad as most, well I

would probably be trapped in my house because I couldn't fit out the doors! now

I can recall Jane did make you think you were hungry and you would try to

eat everything in site. I remember eating some dishes that only very hungry

folks would think of eating, but grass makes a lot of people this way. a buddy I

knew once had a weight problem as well and he ask his doctor to send him to a

fat farm. the doc said he wasn't that fat yet and they wasn't cheap. I always

thought fat farms wasn't real, but later I found out if you got the cash there

really is places like this where you will drop the weight staying there for one

year or how ever long it is. I probably would have started eating worms and bugs

just to have something to chew on. maybe would have tried tree bark and maybe a

grass hoper or two. may have just tried the grass that grows right out of the

ground!

back some years ago when I tried to do right for only a few weeks, I tried to

eat mostly sugar free chocolate turtles and the such. well one time I ate a few

and they were so tasty that I decided just to eat all there was in the sack,

maybe 12 I think. well maybe 2 or 3 hours later the gas hit me and I all most

blew up! I think my wife actually would have preferred I would have! you can't

stop it either. once you get to much of that in your system, well it is Katy bar

the door and back up out of the way.

Things I have learned

I have been a foodie and a diabetc for many

many years.

I managed to learn a few things along the

way- hopefully they will help someone else

to learn from my mistakes instead of the

hard way !!

Whatever you call them- sodas, soft drinks,

Cokes, refrescos, root beer, dr pepper , mountain dew sprite,

crush - they are EVIL !!!

No matter if they are diet or sugar free or

straight up, they all have harmful chemicals

that can suppress your immune system.

They are also addictive.

Avoid them and train yourself to love water,

teas, coffee, or aguas frescas. Aguas frescas

are infusiions made from flowers or fruit.

They are more natural and have less sugar than straight juice.

When you have something to eat, think about the fiber content.

In my experience, if you have something at night with fiber in

it there is less likelihood of you crashing from low blood sugar.

If there is something you LOVE to eat but it has too much

anything, look for a substitute.

For example, if you like pickles, lets say... sweet pickles,

a better option would be sour dills becaue they are not

made with sugar. But if you think dills have too much salt,

make your own refrigerator dills which dont need the salt

for preservation.

Or make a fresh pickle of cucumbers, onion, vinegar and

olive oil. and mebeb some hot pepper flakes if you like hot things.

Hot peppers are good for making you feel happy due to their endorphin

content and are also high in viatmin C and make you feel satisfied

as well as pepping up the taste buds.

When possible avoid processed foods.

You dont need the hidden chemicals or salts or sugars.

Homeade tastes better, is cheaper and fresher as well and

you can make it to your own taste. Some examples are

mustard, blender mayonnaise, salsa, salad dressings like

ranch or blue cheese or italian ot french.

Try to find textures that mimic those of the things you like but are not

good for you, like kale chips instead of potato chips, or sweet potato

fries instead of white potato fries, steamed tacos instead of hard-fried

ones.

Little changes add up yo a big difference !

Often, dialysis patients have high phosphorus

(vitamin K) leves in their blood and this cases them to be unable to et many

things we all love like chocolate and cheese.

I have learned to use cream cheese instead

my preferred cheese on burgers or in pasta or sandwiches or

other things.

Whole wheat pasta is better than regular pasta because is has fiber

and your body needs that fiber to ruminate on. Whole wheat crackers

and cookies are better.

Instead of sugar syrup, use agave nectar or just a sprinkle of cinnamon

on waffles, etc.

Use the pure fruit spreads instead of jelly, or at least preserves which

have more fiber thn jelly and have a great texture.

Instead of relying on salt for taste use other spices or a squeeze of lime

or lemon or a spritz of vinegar.

If you feel the need to put something in your mouth, suck on ice.

Take one bite at a time, chew it deliberately, and dont pick up

another bite until you have swallowed the previous one.

Thank God for each bite or sip a you take it.

If you MUST have cake or pie, choose one with fruit and/or

nuts for the fiber in it.

I am not a dietician nor a doctor, just a lay diabetic who

wants to help others avoid the pirfalls I have experienced.

We all need a little sugar, just choose your poison wisely. (ie: grapes

instead of a candy bar !

I went with and his parents to IHOP one time before the kids were

born. 's Dad and I had a friendly competition and I beat him by having

17 pancakes to his 15. He live to age 82 and passed in 2007. These were

just regular pancakes I I did not put anything but a little butter and syrup

on them. I could never wolf down 17 of them now.

There was a program on the PBS channel several years ago about a fat farm in

Ohio. It was several episodes long. If dwelt mostly on 3 people who

weighed 400-600 pounds. One man almost died just from the weight of his fat

pushing down his lungs and heart. He was bed bound and his wife brought

him whatever food he wanted. He lost over 300 pounds and was still losing.

He was finally able to get up and walk with a lot or occupational therapy.

and I used to lie in bed and " talk " to each other and it was so

funny! In sound, not smell, LOL. We always said we were going to pick up

our feet and fly around the room. But when I stopped drinking regular pop,

the funny sounds and flying around the room stopped. I don't drink as much

diet pop as I did regular. It is awfully quiet around here! LOL.

been there and done all that. not proud of it now, but the facts are there

and lots of folks who knew me then can tell the stories. ever heard of those

guys who on the fourth of July will have a race to see who can eat the most

hotdogs in 2 or 3 minutes? can't recall how many, but do remember it was crazy!

how did they do it and where did they put it? how did they chew it up enough to

get another one down? we can actually eat our selves to death, just like drink

our self to death or O D on drugs! life is just to special and we all don't get

near enough in some cases.

I use to know a young man back in the 80's who at that time was 28 and

weighed 460 pounds and he may have been 5 feet and 6 inches tall. I heard he

lost down to 175 pounds by doing it with diet pills and not eating. then later I

heard through the grape vine from some of my kin that knew him, that he gained

it all back and enough extra that he now is over 500. I also heard he is having

a lot of health problems as well. when I did know him at 460, he had to actually

hold the bottom of his stomach up with both hands so he could breathe easier. I

still had some vision then and would watch him do this. I do know about taking

it off and putting it back on later. I've only done it with 89 pounds back in 89

but that was enough. hard to even believe a person could lose the weight he lost

and gain it all back and more so easy! I got a cousin who lost over 200 pounds

do to his marriage breaking up. he said he was to depressed to eat, so he lost

weight instead. then he found some one and got married again and put all that

weight back on and more now then ever. this is why fly by night diets never

work. we have to change our attitudes and make life style changes and eat to

live for the rest of our days on earth. most people say all the time who are on

this and that diet fad, I can't wait until this stuff is over so I can eat a

horse. they learn nothing and return right back to the same old bad eating

habits that got them fat in the first place. I don't know about your town or

City where you live, but right here in OKC where I live I bet in just a one

square mile around the house we got over 100 restaurants or fast food places.

then you go to the grocery store and what do you first smell when you walk in?

it is always the fried food at the dely. most store will have maybe 2 or 3 rows

of fresh fruit and veggies and the rest is maybe 23 rows of junk. right up at

the check out stand is nothing but junk. no wonder this country is so fat and

unhealthy! for this reason I'm glad I can't see any more to get my self around

to eat more then I need. I can smell it, but can't always know exactly where it

is and my wife isn't telling. I don't go in the grocery store any more my self.

I make a list and call a cab buddy I know. then I send him in with the list and

the money while I sit in the cab and wait on him. if he has any questions he

calls me on the cell phone. this way I only buy what is on my list and I don't

have to temp my self with the different smells in the store. works grate for me!

I don't frequent grocery stores all that much these days since my wife does the

shopping, but it used to be and may still be, around here the one thing you can

count on are all the wonderful smells from the countless items of fresh baked

pastries, donuts, sticky buns, cakes, and pies (not sure if the in-store bakery

is near the front, or if they send the aromas from the ovens towards the front).

As much as a humungous meal at Big Boys is something Mark may be tempted by,

nothing tempts me more than a fresh coconut donut, or even a cream filled donut,

or maybe any kind of fresh Danish with flaky pastry. (I better quit this message

before I salivate to death!)

I don't know, but wow. I see that on TV every year around the 4th of July

from 's. I don't see how you could enjoy the food while pigging that

much.

I did when a pie eating contest when I was 14. But I would definitely not

enter one now, diabetes or not because you meed good front teeth to bite.

I didn't know cabbies would do that.

I guess they'll let you wait in the cab if you're paying them.

They usually tell me like in Walgreens that their not allowed to go in.

o buddy! let me tell you about a apple fritter from ducken doughnuts. the

one's that are huge around and very flat. they are to die fore! haven't had one

in about six weeks and won't ever have another whole one again by my self at one

time. there is a place only 25 miles from here that has baby fritters and I may

as a treat have one baby fritter some day to baby my self. I love doughnuts of

any kind, but the fritter is the best. one time long years ago a buddy and I

went to a doughnut place at 3 a.m because this is when the fresh doughnuts were

coming out of the ovens. we both loved doughnuts, so we ordered 3 dozen all

mixed up and together we ate all but 4. so we ate 32 between us and when we

called the cab to leave, the man ask us if we needed a to go box. can't believe

I didn't take those last 4, but at that moment I think I was in the middle of a

sugar over load and I had to get out of that place in a big hurry. another time

I had the wants for a apple fritter. we live on the south side and the ducken

doughnut place the closest to us was on the North side of town. Well cabs are

the only way 2 blind folks married can get around, so I called a taxi and I paid

round trip to go get 2 apple fritters and a large coffee, $7 for the fritters

and coffee and $42 round trip cab fare. only spent $49 that evening to satisfy

my craving for a apple fritter and it could only come from one place on the

other side of the city! when you are a over eater and addicted to food as I was

most of my life, well you will do just about anything and everything to get the

fix you can't live with out and you have to have it right this moment. those

smells in a store is the biggest reason why I no longer go in the store to shop.

if I can't smell it, then it isn't making me dribble on my self. ever went

shopping at Sam's when they are passing out the goody's to sample? you can

actually make a meal if you make enough rounds through the store eating all the

samples. I use to know a x cab driver who went to work for 7-11 and his job was

to deliver fresh doughnuts and remove and pitch out the day old doughnuts. well

he ask me if I wanted the day old doughnuts when he was in my side of town,

because he was throwing them away. so I being the over eater of OKC said hell

yes! so for about one year he brings me a garbage sack maybe twice a week about

4 a.m and my butt is always out there waiting on him. all the neighbors got free

doughnuts and loved them. we froze some of them and had them later. our dogs

even enjoyed some left over seven eleven doughnuts. every kind you can think of

that they made in there own bakery. I tried them all and I ate a dump truck load

of doughnuts that season and never did I tire of them. thank God he gave up that

job or I would all ready be dead! those were the days though and what memories I

got of so much food and so many pounds and so many health issues now! I was

certainly doing it my way for sure!

cabs here in the city charge $2 per mile and $18 per hour wait time when the

timer is on. this figures out to be 30 cents a minute. of course if you got a

personal driver like we have had for about 12 years, you and he can agree on a

flat rate for things like grocery stores. you won't save a lot, but all you do

save from ride to ride will add up in a month. actually paying a cab isn't any

different then making a car payment and all the up keep that goes with it. it's

nothing to spend $500 a month for the right to be independent and take a cab. we

use to spend twice this amount when I was working too, but now we have other

ways of taking care of business that doesn't always cost as much as a cab.

Subject: Re: Things I have learned

now here is what you do. if the company is staying just a bit longer then

you wish and you are ready for them to leave, but they have decided to just

stay until dinner. you eat the whole bag of that sugar free candy and relax.

in a small amount of time the sugar free will hit you and then they will be

more then happy to leave your home in a big hurry! works every time! take it

from the pig who knows it does for a fact. folks just simply move away from

you and can't seem to get far enough away to fast.

I don't know the answer to that. For the most part I have manage to stay

off of high sugar stuff but once in a grate while like a birthday

party or something like that or dearing thanksgiving and Christmas

something like that then I might cheat a little. Take care, Sincerely

Is it really bad for us to eat one of those little hard butterscotch

candies? I just put one in my mouth and suck on it until it finally gets

too small and dissipates. I probably do that once or twice a week and also

my husband has those fruit slice gumdrops and once in a while when my mouth

and throat feel really dry I pop one of those in my mouth and it takes

sometimes ten minutes for it to finally get small where I can swallow it.

I do not really know how much sugar one of those tiny pieces of candy have

but I figure one of those would prevent me from eating a small meal that

would contain a lot more.

We have a Dunkin Donuts a mile down the road. When we treat ourselves to donuts

for breakfast (about once a month), it's toasted coconut for me!

Hi,

Sav-A-Lot, a discount grocer, took over a store from a high class crocery

store that didn’t make it.

This particular location had a bakery located just as you enter the store

and Sav-A-Lot kept the bakery where it was. Man, this is cruel and unusual

treatment.

All you can think about as you shop is the smell of those fresh baked

goodies. (very sad face)

I don't frequent grocery stores all that much these days since my wife does

the shopping, but it used to be and may still be, around here the one thing

you can count on are all the wonderful smells from the countless items of

fresh baked pastries, donuts, sticky buns, cakes, and pies (not sure if the

in-store bakery is near the front, or if they send the aromas from the ovens

towards the front).

As much as a humungous meal at Big Boys is something Mark may be tempted by,

nothing tempts me more than a fresh coconut donut, or even a cream filled

donut, or maybe any kind of fresh Danish with flaky pastry. (I better quit

this message before I salivate to death!)
