now don't forget! Dave busted my big bubble all to hell and back when he

couldn't wait to tell me that milk is as bad as sugar pop! I figured it was so,

but didn't wish to hear any one say it out loud! I only drank 3 gallons a week

by my self all my life. started the bad habit in maybe 62 when I started school.

we could have all the cold whole milk we could drink. we were told milk is good

for you and makes you grow big and strong, so I had milk at every milk and for a

snack when ever. milk is as bad as pop with sugar! well hell! what makes Dave so

dain smart anyway? I know he is right, but maybe he could have dropped that bomb

shell on me ten years back. now I have almond milk on my oats when I eat them

and I don't drink it like I did regular moo milk. got a dairy right here not to

far away. it cost me $6 per gallon, but have you ever had fresh moo moo? I'm

here to tell you it is one of the finest things our loving God ever put in an

animal in my opinion! I have a friend that is also T 2 and he said a while back

that he wished now that he never would have ever ate red meat! he said not

eating all the red meat he desires is the hardest thing he has ever had to do! I

feel the same way about milk from a cow. I also like goats milk, but it is high

in carbs as well. love butter milk too. never could buy a half gallon of but

milk and have it ever last 24 hours. mostly drank it all at one setting. now

here I sit and tears falling on to my keyboard thinking of the cold hard fact! I

haven't had a drop of cows milk in more then 2 weeks and don't plan to until

April. some Saturday in April I will buy me one pint of cow milk and enjoy every

drop with my breakfast. every month I will repeat the same practice. got to give

up milk and I know it for a fact, just like my buddy has to stop eating all the

red meat he would like to eat. how many of the rest of you had to give some

thing up that you truly dug a lot and would die for to have? I know there is a

certain food or drink in your life that you have always enjoyed and looked

forward to enjoying when you had it in front of you. ribs? bacon? ham? candy?

chips? cola? ice cream? cookies? cakes? pies? fried potatoes? beer? rum? wine?

pasta? bread? etc! come clean with your buddies who have all ready told you

there weakness. If you say you never had one, then I say you aren't human or

from this earth!

Things I have learned

I have been a foodie and a diabetc for many

many years.

I managed to learn a few things along the

way- hopefully they will help someone else

to learn from my mistakes instead of the

hard way !!

Whatever you call them- sodas, soft drinks,

Cokes, refrescos, root beer, dr pepper , mountain dew sprite,

crush - they are EVIL !!!

No matter if they are diet or sugar free or

straight up, they all have harmful chemicals

that can suppress your immune system.

They are also addictive.

Avoid them and train yourself to love water,

teas, coffee, or aguas frescas. Aguas frescas

are infusiions made from flowers or fruit.

They are more natural and have less sugar than straight juice.

When you have something to eat, think about the fiber content.

In my experience, if you have something at night with fiber in

it there is less likelihood of you crashing from low blood sugar.

If there is something you LOVE to eat but it has too much

anything, look for a substitute.

For example, if you like pickles, lets say... sweet pickles,

a better option would be sour dills becaue they are not

made with sugar. But if you think dills have too much salt,

make your own refrigerator dills which dont need the salt

for preservation.

Or make a fresh pickle of cucumbers, onion, vinegar and

olive oil. and mebeb some hot pepper flakes if you like hot things.

Hot peppers are good for making you feel happy due to their endorphin

content and are also high in viatmin C and make you feel satisfied

as well as pepping up the taste buds.

When possible avoid processed foods.

You dont need the hidden chemicals or salts or sugars.

Homeade tastes better, is cheaper and fresher as well and

you can make it to your own taste. Some examples are

mustard, blender mayonnaise, salsa, salad dressings like

ranch or blue cheese or italian ot french.

Try to find textures that mimic those of the things you like but are not

good for you, like kale chips instead of potato chips, or sweet potato

fries instead of white potato fries, steamed tacos instead of hard-fried

ones.

Little changes add up yo a big difference !

Often, dialysis patients have high phosphorus

(vitamin K) leves in their blood and this cases them to be unable to et many

things we all love like chocolate and cheese.

I have learned to use cream cheese instead

my preferred cheese on burgers or in pasta or sandwiches or

other things.

Whole wheat pasta is better than regular pasta because is has fiber

and your body needs that fiber to ruminate on. Whole wheat crackers

and cookies are better.

Instead of sugar syrup, use agave nectar or just a sprinkle of cinnamon

on waffles, etc.

Use the pure fruit spreads instead of jelly, or at least preserves which

have more fiber thn jelly and have a great texture.

Instead of relying on salt for taste use other spices or a squeeze of lime

or lemon or a spritz of vinegar.

If you feel the need to put something in your mouth, suck on ice.

Take one bite at a time, chew it deliberately, and dont pick up

another bite until you have swallowed the previous one.

Thank God for each bite or sip a you take it.

If you MUST have cake or pie, choose one with fruit and/or

nuts for the fiber in it.

I am not a dietician nor a doctor, just a lay diabetic who

wants to help others avoid the pirfalls I have experienced.

We all need a little sugar,just choose your poison wisely. (ie: grapes

instead of a candy bar !

Well,I have diabetic since the age o2, so never really had " give up "

anything as I was raised to eat healthy, but I still love certain foods that

I wish I could eat a lot of. These are pasta with lots of tomato sauce,

potato chips and fruit of any kind. If I was not diabetic, I would probably

be on a fruit diet I don't like milk, but do love most any kind of cheese,

but have to eat little of that as it is high in potassium and fat and makes

my BG go up hours after eating it.

seems like Dave told me to watch my fats late at night during my evening

meal. maybe the cheese I put on my salad may be causing the number to go up of a

morning. I dig fruit too, but we just can't eat a lot of it at one time. I heard

the berry family of fruit is the best for us diabetics. I love water melon and

cantaloupe and oranges. come to think on it peaches and pineapples aren't bad

either. what about keywee? seems like it isn't real high in carbs best I recall

when I looked.

I have been told that us who are diabetic shouldn't be drinking any kind of

fruit juice of any kind. of course I suppose orange juice would be nice to have

in small cans in case your sugar was to low and you needed a quick fix. you best

ask the folks on this list who have a clue. I'm still in the baby step range my

self. just learning to walk the talk is where I am at this time.

I prefer red grape juice when I need to rays my blood sugar. I only drink a

couple ounces though, usually followed by a glucose tablet. This works for me,

but each of us needs to find out what works for you.

I wonder if the juice like trop 50 would be good or you know the drink mixes

that ocean spray and welches have in the single serve packets you mix in to

water I believe they are sweetend with spelnda.

You are correct Mark. Even 4 oz. of juice has at least 15 or more carbs.

Tomato juice has less and I occassiionally will drink 6 or 8 oz. of that

(the low salt kind(.

I have been told that us who are diabetic shouldn't be drinking any kind of

fruit juice of any kind. of course I suppose orange juice would be nice to

have in small cans in case your sugar was to low and you needed a quick fix.

I really like buttermilk biscuits but don't like drinking it.

When I was a child I hated white milk and liked only chocolate. Then when I

was pregnant with Debbie they gave me about 9 half gallons of milk on this

program I was on called WIC and I thought what the hell am I going to do

with 9 half gallons of milk? I did not know Mark to give it to, LOL.

Well, all of a sudden I started to like it and although I still like

chocolate milk and milk shakes, the white tastes pretty good when it is

cold. Well I did go over to 2 percent in recent years.

But I heard somewhere in the discussions that we could have half a cup in a

day.

So I just take a big sip sometimes when making his shakes and I don't

pour myself a glass ever.

My problem is I do not want to face up to the fact of not having certain

foods I like so I just have a oittle taste of this or that. It satisfies

the craving without giving me much of it.

I do get the Shaky Willies when my blood sugar is not high.

IMO, A little sample of this or that is no problemento! I wouldn't suggest going

crazy with this, especially if the blood sugar is up, or if you expect to be

eating a larger than normal meal for instance. Moderation in conjunction with

careful planning can work wonders.

Dear Mark the 1 hard thing I had to give up is the high sugar candy like

butter finger and and other things though I have learned that there are

sugarfree Candy and so when the holidays like easter and Christmas comes I

get Sugarfree candy and only once in a while I have high sugar things

just not very often. I Still have diet soda but not as much as I use too

its now icetea with auttoficial Sweetner. The hardest thing for me is

cutting down on the amount of food I eat. Specially peanutbutter as I

like to have butter and peanut on sometimes on toast and sometimes on

Crackers. Tight now though I am struggling with high bloodaugar and

keep my waight down as it seems like I start to loose waight and just when

things start to look good that is where I loose it as the next thing I

know I'm back to square 1. Which I hate that when that happen's. Any take

now don't forget! Dave busted my big bubble all to hell and back when he

couldn't wait to tell me that milk is as bad as sugar pop! I figured it was

so, but didn't wish to hear any one say it out loud! I only drank 3 gallons

a week by my self all my life. started the bad habit in maybe 62 when I

started school. we could have all the cold whole milk we could drink. we

were told milk is good for you and makes you grow big and strong, so I had

milk at every milk and for a snack when ever. milk is as bad as pop with

sugar! well hell! what makes Dave so dain smart anyway? I know he is right,

but maybe he could have dropped that bomb shell on me ten years back. now I

have almond milk on my oats when I eat them and I don't drink it like I did

regular moo milk. got a dairy right here not to far away. it cost me $6 per

gallon, but have you ever had fresh moo moo? I'm here to tell you it is one

of the finest things our loving God ever put in an animal in my opinion! I

have a friend that is also T 2 and he said a while back that he wished now

that he never would have ever ate red meat! he said not eating all the red

meat he desires is the hardest thing he has ever had to do! I feel the same

way about milk from a cow. I also like goats milk, but it is high in carbs

as well. love butter milk too. never could buy a half gallon of but milk and

have it ever last 24 hours. mostly drank it all at one setting. now here I

sit and tears falling on to my keyboard thinking of the cold hard fact! I

haven't had a drop of cows milk in more then 2 weeks and don't plan to until

April. some Saturday in April I will buy me one pint of cow milk and enjoy

every drop with my breakfast. every month I will repeat the same practice.

got to give up milk and I know it for a fact, just like my buddy has to stop

eating all the red meat he would like to eat. how many of the rest of you

had to give some thing up that you truly dug a lot and would die for to

have? I know there is a certain food or drink in your life that you have

always enjoyed and looked forward to enjoying when you had it in front of

you. ribs? bacon? ham? candy? chips? cola? ice cream? cookies? cakes? pies?

fried potatoes? beer? rum? wine? pasta? bread? etc! come clean with your

buddies who have all ready told you there weakness. If you say you never had

one, then I say you aren't human or from this earth!

In my experience, if you have something at night with fiber in

it there is less likelihood of you crashing from low blood sugar.

If there is something you LOVE to eat but it has too much

anything, look for a substitute.

For example, if you like pickles, lets say... sweet pickles,

a better option would be sour dills becaue they are not

made with sugar. But if you think dills have too much salt,

make your own refrigerator dills which dont need the salt

for preservation.

Or make a fresh pickle of cucumbers, onion, vinegar and

olive oil. and mebeb some hot pepper flakes if you like hot things.

Hot peppers are good for making you feel happy due to their endorphin

content and are also high in viatmin C and make you feel satisfied

as well as pepping up the taste buds.

When possible avoid processed foods.

You dont need the hidden chemicals or salts or sugars.

Homeade tastes better, is cheaper and fresher as well and

you can make it to your own taste. Some examples are

I tell you for a fact I have noticed in the ten years that I have known I was

a T 2 that many other T 2's just flat out ignore the facts when they first find

out they are diabetic. It even seems to me that they continue to eat as they

have always ate and with the same old bad habits. they actually change nothing

of there life style. I was this very way my self. denial or what ever you wish

to label it, but the facts to ignore the disease is there. also it seems while

you are still carrying on as normal your sugar doesn't go up fast enough to

really get your attention. the saw bones is telling us we are now a T 2, but we

choose to not believe him and feel we got lots of time before we have to really

buckle down and get serious about it. even your A1C test every 90 days will

prove this to be so for most of us T 2's. my first A1C back in 2002 was like 6.3

and it stayed in the 6's for more then 4 years before it actually got in to the

7's. I then got a bit serious with the disease, but never as I should have been.

I continued to half ignore the disease and continue on with the same bad eating

habits. then as the next few years rolled slowly by my health began to go down

hill. in 2007 I had the heart attack that done 25% damage to one side of my

heart and I spent the whole month of August in the hospital with one set back

after another. I was told by some in the hospital that it was a very good chance

that my diabetes had caused the heart problems. I didn't believe it of course.

my daddy also had a small heart attack and by pass him self and he wasn't a

diabetic, so this is how I looked at it and after maybe one year after my heart

attack, once again I went back to eating with bad habits and pushing the

diabetes to the back burner. the checking my sugar daily and watching what I ate

only lasted maybe nine months after my heart attack. then I continued on down

the road of more destruction of bad eating habits. my A1C continued to clime and

clime and I got more and more stronger meds to take. then as you know the heart

issues came back and then I was dealing with the A fib problems once again as I

did in 07, but this round was much worse. once again the saw bones and nurses

told me my out of control diabetes was more then likely the cause of my

problems. then and only then did they all get my attention. of course this is

also the time I gave up my struggle to fight the health issues in my life by my

self and gave it all to my God. funny how we will go to God in Prayer and ask

him to help us with something that we can't fight our self alone and then we

will take it back from God and go try once again to fight the battles by our

self. well I finally got knocked down flat on my face after trying it my way and

I was all out of fight and had no more stubborn denial left in me. it took me

ten years and all kinds of health issues and lots of Prayer to finally

understand that I wasn't going to deal with the disease on my own using just my

strength to make all the life changes I needed to make.

I wish it didn't have to work this way for a lot of diabetics, but it does

and I have seen it way to many times in the past. I have a sister in-law right

now that has known for 5 years she is a T 2 and she is doing the very same thing

I done except she is drinking a lot of alcohol and taking pills that she isn't

getting from the doctor. unlucky for her is the fact that her A1C has just now

hit 7.1. all those first 5 years she stayed in the 6's with out any meds and

telling the doc she would handle it with just diet. I've told her and begged her

to just stop and take a look at me, but it isn't getting through to her or she

simply is in the denial stage. I Pray for her every day and this is really the

only thing I can do. the numbers tell the story and they don't lie. some docs

say to stay at 7 and lower and we will be fine and not destroy our health.

others say 6.5 and under to save your health. well she is just now at 7 and

feeling like she is in control with out meds of any kind. that life style of

her's will catch up with her and I believe it is in the near future. she is also

the kind of person that thinks she can't be happy in life with out working seven

days a week. drinking alcohol by the bucket full and popping pills to get a

rush. she isn't 50 yet, but 3 years away. it breaks my heart to see her

destroying her health and life as she is doing, but I didn't listen to all that

told me either, so makes me wonder why I expect her to listen to me? this isn't

the only case though of all the people I know right now that has found out they

are now a T 2 simply because they have bad eating habits and are over weight

from no exercise each day of any kind. they all will say if you ask them, that

they will worry about there disease later when they start feeling bad and of

course we all know of this list that will be kind of to late for good control.

I have came to realize that most of us need to fall on our face and be drug

through the mud first before we will ever listen to good reason or advice. we

humans have to do all the bad habits our self and experience the bad results

from bad decisions before we can pay attention. we simply have to live out our

life doing it all our way, even though we have seen lots of people doing it the

same way and having lots of trouble because of it. I think we just have to go

through those hard falls our self and know how they feel in a personal way

before we can believe the facts. we just can't except that we can do it a easier

way and not go through all the pit falls of life doing it all wrong as many

before us all ready done and proved was a bad decision. we humans are just

simply stubborn and hard headed. I suppose we keep doing the same things over

and over hoping we will have different results. this makes no good sense at all,

but yet it is what it is and all we roll.

I do know though, the longer you don't face the truth and face the facts of

this disease, the harder it will be for us down the road when we do decide to

get control. nothing can be done to reverse what health damage has all ready

been done by the disease, but we can stop it from going any farther and doing

more damage. I would say only a small percentage of diabetics one or two will do

it the right way from day one when they know. these are the smart one's and the

one's who are on top of there game. they aren't stubborn like most of us and

they learn faster then do we. they don't have to live out the pit falls to see

the truth is really true. they get it right off from the get go and handle there

problem head on and take the bull by the horns from the word go.

The million dollar q is why do most of us live in denial? why do we ignore

the facts? why do we believe it will happen to some one else, but not us? why do

we think we got time to make the right choices later? what makes us believe we

got time to change? well don't ask me and I was one of these same people for

dain near ten years and I have no good answer other then stubborn foolish pride!

but none of us can stop from trying to convince those that diabetes is a life

ending disease and works slowly to destroy your well being one day at a time. we

have to continue banging our heads against the brick wall and never give up,

because they who never gave up telling me finally got through to me. I thank God

they never gave up and never stopped trying to change me or point me in the

right direction. It would be so easy to stop trying and just let people destroy

them self if that is there wish, but we who care can't do that. god gave us the

wish to care and to help, so we continue to help in any way we can until the day

comes when we aren't around to care any more in this life.

best advice I can give you is go by what your meter tells you after you have

had some. I suppose some of us can handle it and some can't. as they say here on

the list, your meter is your best friend because a good friend won't lie to you.

well I know that when I drink to much diet anything in a day my leg cramps

that ocean spray and welches have in the single serve packets you mix in to

water I believe they are sweetend with spelnda.

ten gallons of milk for me? I would have tried my best to drink them all

before they went bad. you can freeze milk you buy in the store. however, fresh

milk from a dairy can't be frozen because it will seperate. if you can only

drink 4 ounces of milk and be happy and satisfied, then I take my big fat pig

hat off to you my fine lady!

now here is what you do. if the company is staying just a bit longer then you

wish and you are ready for them to leave, but they have decided to just stay

until dinner. you eat the whole bag of that sugar free candy and relax. in a

small amount of time the sugar free will hit you and then they will be more then

happy to leave your home in a big hurry! works every time! take it from the pig

who knows it does for a fact. folks just simply move away from you and can't

seem to get far enough away to fast.

Avoid them and train yourself to love water,

teas, coffee, or aguas frescas. Aguas frescas

are infusiions made from flowers or fruit.

They are more natural and have less sugar than straight juice.

When you have something to eat, think about the fiber content.

In my experience, if you have something at night with fiber in

it there is less likelihood of you crashing from low blood sugar.

If there is something you LOVE to eat but it has too much

anything, look for a substitute.

For example, if you like pickles, lets say... sweet pickles,

a better option would be sour dills becaue they are not

made with sugar. But if you think dills have too much salt,

make your own refrigerator dills which dont need the salt

for preservation.

Or make a fresh pickle of cucumbers, onion, vinegar and

olive oil. and mebeb some hot pepper flakes if you like hot things.

Hot peppers are good for making you feel happy due to their endorphin

content and are also high in viatmin C and make you feel satisfied

as well as pepping up the taste buds.

When possible avoid processed foods.

Is it really bad for us to eat one of those little hard butterscotch

candies? I just put one in my mouth and suck on it until it finally gets

too small and dissipates. I probably do that once or twice a week and also

my husband has those fruit slice gumdrops and once in a while when my mouth

and throat feel really dry I pop one of those in my mouth and it takes

sometimes ten minutes for it to finally get small where I can swallow it.

I do not really know how much sugar one of those tiny pieces of candy have

but I figure one of those would prevent me from eating a small meal that

would contain a lot more.

Actually it was 9 half gallons, or 4 and a half gallons. But when I didn't

like it and there was only me and it seemed enormous. I did used to

freeze milk a lot. But not now, we just buy a half gallon white and a half

gallon chocolate a week. needs all the calories he can get because

he is bed ridden and had to use a feeding tube for a while. Now I can

bombard him with milk shakes made with Instant Breakfast and vanilla ice

cream. I do sneak the last little sip that remains in the blender when I

pour his glass. It puffs up so much it would overflow the glass, so it

overflows into my mouth, LOL.

I kind of am focusing on weight loss or at least maintaining but mostly

trying to do better at controlling the diabetes.

I am probably around 30 or 35 pounds more than I should be. I weighed 167

on Monday.

I just gave up cigarettes.

I've smoked on and off, but I miss it, but I sure don't miss the coughing

and the smell.

I heard that smoking causes swelling in the legs.

I went back to smoking in the summer of 2010 and really started again in

December of 2011.

I have quit before.

I hope to stay off for good this time.

I found I liked the Crystal Light but some of them give me a little heart

burn and leave an after taste. I really do like the Iced Tea Peach one

however. I also notice I get some flavors in the Kroger kind that we don't

see in the Cryatal Light. The Kroger ones have the powder in the little

cups. The Crystal Light has the little envelopes inside the container. I

think those containers are cool so I saved several of them. I figure I

could use them to put things in such as small pieces of candy.
